Iyaji Joseph’s Daily Catholic Reflection for today Wednesday, 12th-06-2024

Beloved in Christ, today is Wednesday, the 12th day in the Month of June, year 2024. I am here as usual to share the word of God with you. My name is Joseph Iyaji. In today’s edition of my daily Catholic reflection, we shall learn about the importance of unwavering faith and adherence to God’s commandments, as well as the fulfillment and continuity of the law through Christ.

In our first reading today from 1 Kings 18:20-39, we witness a dramatic confrontation between the prophet Elijah and the prophets of Baal. Elijah challenges the people of Israel to choose between following the Lord or Baal. He sets up a contest to demonstrate the power of the true God. The prophets of Baal call upon their god to no avail. But when Elijah prays to the Lord, fire descends from heaven and consumes the sacrifice, proving that the Lord is the true God. The lesson here is clear: we must remain steadfast in our faith, rejecting false idols and trusting in the power and presence of the one true God. Elijah’s unwavering faith and courage serve as an example for us to follow, especially in times of doubt or societal pressure.

In our gospel reading of today from Matthew 5:17-19, Jesus addresses the importance of the law. He states that He has not come to abolish the law or the prophets but to fulfill them. Jesus emphasizes that not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Furthermore, He warns that anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. Conversely, whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. This passage underscores the continuity and fulfillment of the law through Christ. It teaches us that obedience to God’s commandments remains crucial, and that Christ’s teachings do not negate but rather complete and deepen our understanding of the law.

Both readings highlight the importance of fidelity to God and His commandments. Elijah’s encounter with the prophets of Baal shows us the necessity of choosing God over false idols and remaining faithful to Him even when it is challenging. Jesus’ words in the gospel reading remind us that the commandments are not obsolete but are brought to their fullest expression through Him. As followers of Christ, we are called to live out these commandments with sincerity and integrity.
