Abuja, Nigeria – 11 August 2025 – Dumebi Kachikwu, the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has made a striking claim that former President Goodluck Jonathan offered Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, the position of Coordinating Minister of the Economy in exchange for withdrawing his candidacy in the 2027 presidential election to support Jonathan’s bid. Kachikwu made these allegations during a press conference in Abuja on Friday, 8 August 2025.

Kachikwu asserted that Jonathan’s re-entry into the presidential race is a strategic move by Northern political interests to diminish the South’s influence ahead of the 2027 elections. “In order to weaken the South, they have now drafted in former President Jonathan into the race, who is alleged to be offering Peter Obi the position of Coordinating Minister of the Economy for him to support his ambition,” he stated. He further claimed that Obi was explicitly told he could not secure Northern votes due to his Igbo heritage, adding, “A Peter Obi has been told in very clear terms that he will never get northern votes as an Ibo man and as such he should accept to be Atiku’s running mate.”

The former ADC candidate also accused former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and select Northern elites of perpetuating political dominance without addressing the region’s persistent challenges of illiteracy and poverty. He alleged that these elites manipulate “region, religion, tongue, tribe, and poverty” to convince Northern voters that Southern leaders, including President Bola Tinubu, are responsible for their economic struggles. “On a daily basis, they are spreading deliberate falsehoods against not only President Tinubu but against all potential southern aspirants for the Office of President,” Kachikwu charged.

Kachikwu called for national unity, urging Nigerians to reject divisive tactics and work towards an equitable future. “We must all come to equity with clean hands and sincerity of purpose. We don’t burn our houses because we want to kill rats and cockroaches; sometimes we just need to make our houses clean so that rats and cockroaches leave on their own,” he said, concluding with a hope that “Nigeria will soon work for every one of us.”

The allegations have sparked intense debate, with no official response yet from Jonathan or Obi. As the 2027 election approaches, such claims highlight the complex interplay of regional politics and ethnic dynamics in Nigeria’s political landscape.
