Kaduna Government Launches Free Sanitary Pads Initiative for Girls, Sparks Mixed Reactions

In what has been described as a historic first in Northern Nigeria, the Kaduna State Government under Governor Uba Sani has launched the “Pad the Girl Child Initiative”, a bold intervention aimed at tackling menstrual health challenges and promoting girl-child education. The initiative, which commenced on 20th September 2025 at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, seeks to distribute free sanitary pads and provide menstrual health education to over 40,000 female students across tertiary institutions in the state.

Speaking at the launch, Governor Uba Sani emphasised that menstrual health should not be a barrier to education or dignity for any girl in Kaduna State. He argued that if condoms are distributed free in the interest of public health, sanitary pads should also be freely available in the interest of women’s health and dignity.

The Governor noted that many young women are forced to miss classes or drop out of school due to the inability to afford sanitary pads. By addressing this, the state government hopes to reduce absenteeism, break barriers to learning, and restore dignity to thousands of female students.

“This is not just a health project—it is an empowerment initiative,” Governor Uba Sani said. “By removing such barriers, we are ensuring that every girl in Kaduna State has the opportunity to pursue education without avoidable hindrances.”
