Kano Govt Hints at Imminent Resolution of Emirship Crisis After Gov Yusuf’s APC Defection
The Kano State Government has hinted that the protracted crisis surrounding the Kano Emirship may soon be resolved, following Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, disclosed this during a radio programme, expressing optimism that the long-running rivalry over the revered traditional stool is nearing its end.

‘We Are Now One’ — Govt Signals Breakthrough
Speaking on the programme, Waiya declared that the political alignment between the state and the Federal Government has removed major obstacles that previously stalled reconciliation efforts.
“I assure you that very soon, the Kano government will resolve the dispute over the Kano Emirate, because we are now one,” he said.
According to him, the resolution process may also involve voluntary decisions by the contenders themselves, as dialogue and mutual understanding deepen.
“It is possible that some will step down from the throne on their own, or others will seek reconciliation because a mutual understanding has been reached,” Waiya added.
Akahi News gathered that the state government is intensifying consultations with key stakeholders, including traditional leaders and political actors, to ensure a peaceful and lawful outcome.
Commitment to Dialogue and Rule of Law
The commissioner stressed that the Yusuf administration is committed to resolving the crisis through dialogue, respect for traditional institutions, and strict adherence to the rule of law.
“Our approach is guided by respect for the rule of law, traditional institutions, and the collective interests of the people of Kano State,” he said, adding that the issue would not be allowed to generate tension or distract the government from its developmental responsibilities.
APC Defection Seen as Strategic Advantage
Waiya also described Governor Yusuf’s defection to the APC as a strategic move that would yield tangible benefits for Kano State, particularly through closer collaboration with the Federal Government.
“The defection opens more doors for Kano. With stronger collaboration with the Federal Government, we expect more support in critical sectors such as infrastructure, health, education, and social welfare,” he stated.
He emphasised that the administration remains firmly committed to its “Kano First” agenda, insisting that the state’s development must take precedence over personal or factional interests.
“Our priority is Kano. Anyone whose interest collides with that objective will not be allowed to slow down governance,” Waiya warned.
‘Two Emirs’ Stalemate Nearing an End
For nearly two years, Kano State has been locked in a complex emirship crisis, with Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and Emir Aminu Ado Bayero both laying claim to the Kano throne.
While Sanusi has been operating from the historic Gidan Rumfa palace, Ado Bayero has remained at the Nassarawa mini-palace, creating an unprecedented dual-emir situation that has divided opinions across the state.
Speaking on Muhasa, a local radio station in Kano, Waiya suggested that the political “unification” of the state and federal governments under the APC has significantly eased tensions and paved the way for a peaceful settlement.
Akahi News learnt that the state government has already put concrete measures in place to restore lasting peace and stability, with strong indications that the emirship deadlock is approaching its final resolution.
