According to eyewitnesses, the driver had been flagged down at the checkpoint and was asked to present his car papers. While attending to the request, the officer reportedly noticed that the man was wearing a pair of Meta AI smart glasses. Sources told Akahi News that the officer, apparently suspicious of the device, attempted to forcibly remove it from the driver’s face.

The unexpected action sparked a heated argument, with the driver insisting that the glasses were his personal property and not a threat to law enforcement operations.

Growing Concerns Over AI Devices

The incident has raised fresh concerns about the awareness of security personnel regarding emerging technologies such as AI-integrated wearables. Tech experts have noted that AI smart glasses are increasingly popular for navigation, real-time translation, video recording, and virtual assistance — but can also raise privacy and security concerns when used in sensitive environments.

Public Reaction

While the details of how the situation was eventually resolved remain unclear, the encounter has drawn mixed reactions on social media. Many Nigerians criticised the officer’s attempt to seize private property, describing it as harassment, while others argued that law enforcement agencies need clearer guidelines on the use of such gadgets in public spaces.

Calls are now mounting for better sensitisation of police officers on handling modern technology devices, to prevent future confrontations that could escalate unnecessarily.
