According to eyewitness accounts, the officers allegedly stopped the young man on his way home, accused him of being an internet fraudster — popularly known as a “Yahoo boy” — and proceeded to search his phone despite finding no incriminating evidence.

The officers were said to have initially demanded a staggering ₦1 million from the furniture maker before finally coercing him into parting with the ₦300,000 he had on him at the time.

Community sources told Akahi News that the victim, known for his craftsmanship and integrity, had no previous record of wrongdoing, making the extortion claims particularly shocking.

Mama Pee’s Bold Intervention

Upon hearing of the incident, Mama Pee, a well-known community figure, reportedly stormed the police station demanding an explanation. Videos circulating online show her confronting officers and insisting on accountability for the money allegedly collected from the innocent craftsman.

Her intervention drew support from residents, many of whom have long complained about harassment and extortion by some security personnel in the area.

Calls for Police Reform

The incident has reignited public calls for broader police reforms in Nigeria, particularly around unlawful profiling of young people as cybercriminals.

Human rights advocates argue that arbitrary phone searches, intimidation, and extortion undermine trust between security agencies and the communities they serve.

Authorities Yet to Respond

As of press time, police authorities in Edo State have yet to release an official statement on the allegations or confirm whether any disciplinary action will be taken against the implicated officers.

Meanwhile, civil society groups have urged the Inspector General of Police to launch a full investigation, warning that such incidents erode public confidence in law enforcement.
