The incident came to light through a viral X post by user CHUKS (@ChuksEricE), featuring a video of the traditional healer being questioned over the alleged fraudulent transaction. In the footage, she appeared unable to give a satisfactory explanation as to how the funds—equivalent to approximately £29,000—were spent or why the client had yet to receive the promised spiritual benefits.

According to initial reports, the client had made cumulative payments over time, believing the spiritual intervention would resolve pressing personal and financial challenges. However, the lack of visible results and the mounting cost eventually triggered suspicions, leading to her arrest.

Pattern of Spiritual Fraud in Nigeria

This case echoes a troubling pattern of similar scams within Nigeria’s traditional healing sector. Such schemes, often compared to the infamous “419 Advanced Fee” frauds highlighted by the U.S. Secret Service, involve victims paying hefty sums upfront for promised financial windfalls, spiritual breakthroughs, or protection rituals that rarely materialise.

In 2022, Akahi News learnt that a group of self-acclaimed spiritualists were charged in court for defrauding a woman of a comparable amount under similar circumstances. Security experts warn that the blending of traditional practices with modern digital platforms has made it easier for some unscrupulous individuals to exploit vulnerable clients.

Calls for Regulation and Consumer Protection

The incident has reignited debates over the regulation of spiritual services in Nigeria. While traditional religion and spirituality remain deeply rooted in many communities, critics argue that a lack of oversight leaves clients exposed to exploitation and fraud.

Platforms such as Priests.Africa, which aim to connect spiritual seekers with vetted practitioners, have emerged in recent years to bring some level of order and accountability. Yet, this latest scandal highlights the urgent need for stronger consumer protection policies and a clear regulatory framework governing spiritual transactions.

Authorities Yet to Confirm Next Steps

As at press time, Enugu authorities have yet to release full details of the ongoing investigation or confirm whether formal charges will be filed against the suspect. However, public opinion appears sharply divided, with some calling for stricter laws while others argue that clients willingly enter into such agreements, making prosecution complex.

For now, the arrest serves as a cautionary tale about the risks of mixing large financial transactions with unregulated spiritual promises—an issue likely to remain in the public spotlight in the weeks ahead.
