Nigeria Police Trains 192 Officers on Cyber Forensic Intelligence, Arrests Three Over Online Fraud

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has intensified its fight against cybercrime with the successful training of 192 officers on the Athena Forensic Intelligence Solution (AFIS), alongside the arrest of three suspects for cyberstalking, identity theft, and fraud.
The specialised nationwide training, held between July 9 and August 15, 2025, was conducted in partnership with Radio Tactics Group Limited. Participants were drawn from the 36 State Commands, the Federal Capital Territory, and 10 specialised formations of the Force, in a move aimed at enhancing digital forensic capacity and intelligence gathering across the country.
According to the police, the programme focused on advanced techniques such as threat identification, extraction and processing of communication and location data from SIM cards, GPS devices, satellite phones, grey-market phones, and biometric capture. Officers were also trained on the use of forensic hotlists to match intelligence records with operational data. Experts from the NPF National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) and Radio Tactics Group facilitated the sessions, equipping participants with mission-ready skills for tackling sophisticated cyber threats.
In a related development, operatives of the NPF-NCCC apprehended three suspects — identified as Gbenga Samuel, Dele Titus, and Olalekan Oke — in Abuja and Lagos for cyber offences. Investigations revealed that the trio were involved in digital impersonation and large-scale cyber fraud schemes. On July 18, 2025, they allegedly hacked a WhatsApp account, threatened the victim with data exposure, and demanded ₦3 million. Forensic analysis led to their arrest, recovery of the compromised account, and the unravelling of an organised crime ring now under investigation.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to adopting modern and digital approaches in combating cybercrime, stressing continuous training and retraining of personnel to align with global best practices.
The Police urged Nigerians to remain vigilant against online threats, assuring the public that ongoing reforms in digital policing will strengthen national security and safeguard citizens in the digital space.
