Nollywood Veteran Clem Ohameze Debunks Stroke Rumours, Moves Against Peddlers of Fake News

Veteran Nollywood actor Clem Ohameze has debunked viral social media claims suggesting he has been suffering from a stroke for over two decades and has been abandoned by his children. The 60-year-old movie star, in a video released on Saturday, described the reports as “false, malicious, and damaging” while revealing that both the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) have been formally notified to investigate the source of the misinformation.

The Viral Claims

The rumours, which spread widely on Facebook, alleged that Ohameze had been battling a stroke for many years and that only his daughter had been taking care of him while his sons supposedly abandoned him. The post fabricated quotes, attributing emotional statements to the actor, such as:

“Since I had a stroke, my daughter is the only person who has not given up on me. She has been taking care of me for over two decades now. My sons don’t care about me anymore… If my daughter had not been born, I would have been dead more than a decade ago.”

The post also attempted to paint a picture of betrayal, claiming the actor once prioritised his sons but was now neglected by them.

Ohameze Sets the Record Straight

In a strongly worded response, Ohameze denied ever granting such an interview or making the quoted statements. He clarified that he has never suffered a stroke and dismissed the claim of having three sons, calling it a fabrication.

“The other time, it was that I was dead; now it is that I had a stroke. I said this and that, but who did I grant the interview to? Do I have three sons? What nonsense is this? Why don’t you call and reach out to me and confirm?” he said.

The actor revealed that he has taken legal steps to address the issue, explaining that the identity and number of the individual behind the viral post have been forwarded to security agencies.

“I have initiated a police case. I have sent his number and name to them. This is a cybercrime. I also called my friend, who is a director in the DSS. It has cost me a lot to come this far in my life. I will not let someone rubbish me just like that for cheap popularity because you want to attract traffic to your page,” he added.

Concern Over Cyberbullying in Nollywood

Ohameze expressed frustration that the constant circulation of false news about his health has caused unnecessary distress to his family, especially his children. He noted that his daughter was the only one who came across the recent post and became worried until he reassured her.

He condemned the trend of using celebrities as clickbait for online traffic, stressing that such actions amount to character assassination and cyberbullying.

Calls for Accountability

The actor’s reaction has triggered conversations about the need for stricter regulations against the spread of misinformation and cyber harassment in Nigeria. Many Nollywood fans and stakeholders have since expressed support for Ohameze, urging authorities to take decisive action against those who peddle harmful fake news.

As investigations continue, Ohameze has appealed to the public to disregard the false claims, assuring his fans that he is in good health and focused on his career.
