Ododo Urges Respect for Traditional Institutions, Says Royal Fathers Must Remain Revered

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State has called on political actors and stakeholders to uphold the sanctity of traditional institutions, stressing that respect for royal fathers must remain non-negotiable regardless of status or political influence.

The governor made the appeal on Tuesday at the Government House in Lokoja while receiving a delegation of traditional rulers from Yagba West Local Government Area, led by Oba J.J. Falope.

Akahi News gathered that the meeting underscored the growing emphasis on strengthening collaboration between government and traditional leadership structures in Nigeria.

Traditional Rulers as Pillars of Governance

Addressing the delegation, Governor Ododo described traditional rulers as indispensable partners in governance, particularly at the grassroots level.

According to him, their roles as custodians of culture, peace, and community cohesion place them at the centre of effective decision-making.

“No matter how highly placed anyone may be, our royal fathers must be accorded the respect they deserve. They are the bridge between government and the people, and we must continue to honour and protect that institution,” he stated.

Akahi News learnt that the governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fostering inclusive governance by deepening engagement with traditional institutions across the state.

This raises an enduring question within Nigeria’s evolving democracy: can modern governance truly succeed without the wisdom and legitimacy of traditional authority?

Call for Consultation and Participatory Leadership

Governor Ododo emphasised the need for continuous consultation with elders and community leaders, particularly on sensitive political matters.

He noted that inclusive governance requires that stakeholders be carried along in decision-making processes to ensure stability and progress.

“Stakeholders must be consulted. Elders must be carried along. Traditional rulers must be involved before decisions are taken, especially on issues that affect the people directly,” he said.

The governor also addressed ongoing political discussions in Yagba West, particularly around zoning arrangements, stating that he would await formal recommendations from elders before taking any position.

“I will continue to respect the voice of the elders because that is the true voice of the people,” he added.

Akahi News gathered that this approach reflects a governance model rooted in dialogue rather than unilateral decision-making.

But it invites deeper reflection: in a democratic system driven by elections, how much weight should unelected traditional authorities carry in shaping political outcomes?

Alignment with National Leadership Philosophy

Governor Ododo revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has consistently encouraged leaders to respect and engage traditional institutions.

He noted that his administration would continue to align with this counsel, reinforcing the role of royal fathers in governance.

This alignment highlights a broader national recognition of the importance of traditional systems in maintaining social order and political stability.

Yet, another philosophical question emerges: is the strength of a nation found in its ability to modernise, or in its capacity to preserve and integrate its heritage?

Yagba West Leaders Pledge Support

Earlier, speaking on behalf of the delegation, Oba J.J. Falope expressed appreciation to the governor for his commitment to inclusive governance and sustained engagement with traditional rulers.

He described the visit as a step toward strengthening ties between Yagba West and the state government, pledging continued support for the administration.

“You will always find the people of Yagba West standing firmly behind you like an Iroko tree,” the monarch said.

Akahi News learnt that the traditional rulers also commended the governor’s developmental efforts in the area, citing improvements in infrastructure, increased political inclusion, and enhanced government presence.

They further acknowledged ongoing security interventions, including the deployment of personnel and surveillance measures, which they said have contributed to improved safety.

Political Stability and Development Agenda

On political matters, the delegation reiterated support for continuity in governance while advocating for the retention of the senatorial seat within Yagba West.

They also expressed gratitude to former Governor Yahaya Adoza Bello for his contributions to the development of the region and the strengthening of traditional institutions.

In separate remarks, the Commissioner for Environment and Ecological Management, Engr. Joseph Olusegun, and the Chairman of Yagba West Local Government Area, Hon. Tosin Olokun, praised the governor’s leadership style, highlighting his efforts to promote unity and collaboration.

Governor Ododo, in his closing remarks, reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to security, infrastructure development, and inclusive governance.

He urged all stakeholders to prioritise unity, mutual respect, and cooperation as essential ingredients for the progress of Kogi State.

Tradition, Power, and the Future

The governor’s message reflects a broader national conversation about the place of traditional institutions in a rapidly modernising society.

As Nigeria continues to navigate complex political and social realities, the balance between tradition and modern governance remains a delicate one.

Can respect for royal fathers coexist seamlessly with democratic principles?
Or does one inevitably reshape the other over time?

For now, Governor Ododo’s position is clear: the dignity of traditional institutions must be preserved.
