Ogun Pastor Jailed 21 Years for Defiling 12-Year-Old Girl — Family Still Traumatized
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
A heart-wrenching story from Ogun State has revealed how a mere ₦1,500 meant for a school textbook led to the destruction of a young girl’s innocence and the shame of a once-trusted pastor.
The Tragedy That Began with ₦1,500
Two and a half years ago, Blessing (not her real name), a 12-year-old pupil of a public primary school in Orita, Atan, Ogun State, was sent home for failing to pay ₦1,500 for a textbook. While her mother was busy at her hairdressing stall and her father away in Lagos working as an electrician, the girl waited helplessly outside their home in the afternoon sun.

A neighbour the family trusted deeply, identified as Pastor Oluwole Jonathan of Christ Apostolic Church, Land of Mercy, invited her into his apartment to rest. According to reports, he offered her medicine for a headache, which she reluctantly took. She later fell asleep — and woke up to find blood on her body.
The pastor allegedly warned her not to tell anyone, threatening that she would die if she spoke out. The terrified girl remained silent until her pregnancy became visible months later.
Family’s Shock and Betrayal
Her mother, overwhelmed by disbelief, recounted that the revelation came after neighbours expressed concern about her daughter’s changing appearance. “I tested her myself. When the result showed positive, I thought it was a mistake until the doctor confirmed she was five months pregnant,” she told journalists.
Her father said he was shattered when his daughter named Pastor Jonathan — a man he respected as a spiritual mentor and family friend — as the culprit. “I couldn’t believe it. He was someone we prayed with, someone we trusted,” he said.
Court Conviction and Ongoing Struggles
The matter was reported to the police, leading to Pastor Jonathan’s arrest. Although he initially denied the accusation, DNA evidence later confirmed him as the baby’s father. The case was supported by the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) in Ogun State and Spring Centre, an NGO that offered the girl medical and emotional support.
In January 2025, the High Court sitting in Ilaro found Pastor Oluwole Jonathan guilty of defilement and sentenced him to 21 years imprisonment.
Despite the conviction, the family remains haunted by the experience. The young mother has been struggling with emotional distress and unusual behaviour, including wandering away from school and claiming to hear strange voices. Her parents have since relocated to Ifo, Ogun State, and enrolled her in a tailoring centre where she is being closely monitored.
A Wake-Up Call
The case has once again drawn public attention to the rising incidents of child sexual abuse and the misuse of religious influence across Nigeria. Advocates have called for stronger enforcement of child protection laws and stiffer penalties for offenders.
With the Senate proposing a life sentence for defilement of minors, many Nigerians hope the new measure will serve as a deterrent to predators posing as men of God.
For Blessing’s parents, justice in court is not enough. Their greatest hope now is that their daughter finds peace — and that her story prevents another child from suffering the same fate.
