OOPL Condemns Alleged EFCC Midnight Raid, Demands Apology and Legal Redress

The management of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) has strongly condemned what it described as an unlawful and violent invasion of its premises by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the early hours of Sunday.

According to the OOPL, the raid occurred around 2 a.m. during a private gathering within the complex, causing widespread panic. Guests reportedly sustained varying degrees of injuries while scrambling for safety as the armed operatives, allegedly led by one “Olapade,” fired sporadically and issued death threats to those present.
In a statement released by OOPL’s Managing Director, Mr Vitalis Ortese, the management described the sting operation as a blatant disregard for the fundamental rights of individuals and the corporate rights of the OOPL. Ortese noted that the event had police presence — both stationed at the gates and reinforced by officers from Kemta Police Station, Abeokuta — none of whom had prior knowledge of the EFCC’s operation.
The management emphasised that the gathering was a publicised private event and questioned the necessity of such a “primitive” show of force. It accused the EFCC of failing to present any warrant and ignoring due process, insisting that the actions amounted to “gangster-like” behaviour.
OOPL has demanded a full explanation and an unreserved public apology from the EFCC, not only to the institution but also to the individuals whose rights were allegedly violated. The statement warned that the library would not hesitate to seek legal redress and push for applicable sanctions if the demands are ignored.
“The Management has commenced its investigations into the incident and will take up the matter with the highest authorities, including the EFCC, the police, and the Department of State Security,” the statement concluded.
