In a fiery exchange that reflects the deepening political tensions in Osun State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of orchestrating a campaign of fabricated lies and deliberate misinformation against Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, Nigeria’s Minister of Marine and Blue Economy and immediate-past Governor of Osun State.

The APC, in a strongly-worded statement signed by its state chairman, Sooko Tajudeen Lawal, condemned what it described as a “disgraceful” attempt by the Osun PDP to score cheap political points by maligning the reputation of Alhaji Oyetola, a respected figure within the state and national politics.

“A Web of Lies to Salvage a Sinking Ship”

The statement, which was made available to Akahi News, expressed disappointment that the PDP, despite being the ruling party in the state, could stoop to “barefaced fabrications” and “imaginary plots” in order to deceive the public. The APC noted that such desperate antics only reveal the level of panic within the PDP over its rapidly diminishing popularity and internal collapse.

“It is disheartening to observe that a ruling party in a state like Osun could go to the extent of fabricating lies against the immediate-past governor of the state in order to whip up sentiments in the court of the public,” Lawal wrote.

He expressed particular concern that Mr Sunday Bisi, the state chairman of the PDP, affixed his signature to what the APC calls a “watery and concocted statement,” allegedly accusing Oyetola of plotting to rig future elections in collaboration with the Nigeria Police and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The APC categorically denied all such claims.

“No Such Meeting Took Place”

The opposition party challenged the PDP to provide any credible evidence to back its allegations, insisting that there was never any closed-door APC stakeholders’ meeting where Oyetola purportedly discussed strategies to manipulate the electoral process or to illegally unlock local government funds through the Attorney-General of the Federation.

Lawal clarified that the local government allocation issue had already been judicially resolved by the Court of Appeal on February 10, 2025, making the PDP’s claims both irrelevant and malicious.

“It was also not true that Alhaji Oyetola told the stakeholders of the APC at the meeting that he was working on the Attorney-General of the Federation… there could not have been any need for that as the logjam had been settled by the Court of Appeal judgment,” the statement affirmed.

PDP Haunted by Its Own Shadows – APC

Continuing the rebuttal, the APC alleged that Governor Ademola Adeleke and his party operatives were becoming increasingly paranoid due to their political shortcomings and diminishing influence across the state. According to the APC, the PDP leadership has been thrown into disarray, particularly following the defection of several of its key members to the opposition.

“Governor Adeleke himself has met a brick wall in his alleged attempt to defect into the APC. This frustration has now bred paranoia, where even harmless actions of the opposition are interpreted as threats,” the party claimed.

They further stated that “technology has deflated the balloon of lies” and challenged the PDP to present any audio or video evidence of their accusations, asserting that none exists.

A Pattern of False Alarms

The APC accused Mr Sunday Bisi of having a history of unsubstantiated allegations, citing two specific past instances. According to Lawal, Bisi once accused the Inspector-General of Police of plotting to assassinate him and, on another occasion, falsely claimed the APC was stockpiling arms — both of which, the APC says, were eventually discredited.

“The memory of the discerning members of society is still super active. Sunday Bisi is a man whose public credibility is tainted by serial fabrications,” Lawal wrote.

“We Will Not Be Intimidated”

In the final paragraphs of the statement, the APC sent a stern warning to the PDP against attempting to manipulate the electoral process, especially recalling incidents during the 2022 governorship elections in Ede North and South where voting reportedly continued unlawfully past 11:00 pm.

“If Governor Adeleke and his co-travellers think that there would be an unfettered allowance for their members and supporters to vote till 11:00pm… they are making a great mistake of their lives as such would be legally resisted,” Lawal cautioned.

He concluded by urging the public to dismiss the PDP’s recent statements as “balderdash, misplaced and superfluous,” warning that the opposition will not allow political violence or intimidation to return under the guise of electoral activities.

A Fierce Battle Ahead?

With the 2025 elections fast approaching, the political atmosphere in Osun State appears set to heat up even further. While both parties continue to trade words, the electorate will ultimately determine whose message resonates when the ballots are cast.
