Cultural enthusiasts gathered to celebrate the grand finale of the 2024 Osun-Osogbo festival, but the event was marked by a noticeably low turnout. The reason for the sparse attendance was attributed to the ongoing “End Bad Governance” protest, which has been taking place across the country.

The nationwide protest, scheduled to last ten days, had been active in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, until the sixth day when organizers suspended the exercise. This brief hiatus was intended to allow tourists and adherents to attend the Osun-Osogbo festival, which coincidentally fell on the ninth day of the protest.

Despite the temporary suspension of the protest, anxiety and uncertainty lingered, deterring many from participating in the festival. The Osun-Osogbo festival, a significant cultural event, typically attracts a large crowd, but this year’s edition was subdued, reflecting the prevailing mood of unease in the country.

Osun-Osogbo Festival Concludes Under Tight Security Amidst Protests

As the Osun-Osogbo festival reached its grand finale, a heavy security presence was reinforced to maintain law and order. The entrance of the grove was heavily manned by officers from the Nigerian Police Force, Nigeria Security and Defence Corps, and the Joint Security Taskforce.

Additionally, members of the Odua People’s Congress (OPC) and the Nigeria Hunters Group were deployed within the grove, armed with firearms to ensure a peaceful celebration. This heightened security measure was in line with the earlier statement made by SP Yemisi Opalola, the Police Public Relations Officer in Osun, who assured that adequate security would be provided before, during, and after the festival.

Notably, the organizers of the “End Bad Government and End Hunger” protest in the state had agreed to suspend their activities to allow for a peaceful celebration of the festival, in collaboration with the police. The robust security presence helped to ensure a successful and incident-free conclusion of the Osun-Osogbo festival.
