Outrage as Video Shows Christian Man Weeping After Sharia Court Allegedly Seizes and Sells His Building in Abuja
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News

A disturbing video making rounds online has sparked widespread outrage after a Christian man in Abuja was seen weeping bitterly, claiming that his building was sealed and sold off by the Sharia Appeal Court, Gudu, despite his legitimate ownership documents.

Akahi News gathered that the emotional clip, which was aired via Arise TV, showed the visibly distressed man lamenting that he was not a Muslim and therefore should have had no dealings whatsoever with a Sharia Court. The incident, according to multiple reports, occurred in the Gudu area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Arise TV Anchors Condemn Alleged Sharia Court Overreach

During the live broadcast, Arise TV anchors strongly criticised what they described as “a dangerous overreach of religious authority” in a constitutionally secular nation. They condemned the alleged involvement of the Sharia Appeal Court in adjudicating a property matter belonging to a Christian resident, calling it an affront to Nigeria’s democratic principles and the rule of law.

The anchors further blamed what they termed the “emboldenment” of religious institutions on the Muslim-Muslim ticket of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. According to them, the incident reflects a growing perception of imbalance and insensitivity in Nigeria’s justice system, particularly in the Federal Capital Territory — a region meant to represent all faiths equally.

Public Reactions and Legal Concerns

Since the video surfaced, social media has been flooded with reactions from Nigerians who expressed disbelief and anger over the development. Many questioned how a Sharia Court, which is constitutionally limited to matters involving Muslims under Islamic law, could reportedly take jurisdiction over a Christian’s property.

Legal experts who spoke with Akahi News described the case as “deeply concerning,” urging the National Judicial Council (NJC) and the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to immediately investigate the matter.

A senior legal analyst told Akahi News that, “If this claim is verified, it represents a serious violation of Nigeria’s constitutional provisions on freedom of religion and equality before the law. A Sharia Court has no legal competence to handle property disputes involving non-Muslims.”

Religious Tensions and National Implications

Akahi News observed that the incident has reignited debates over the appropriateness of Sharia courts operating in Abuja, given that the FCT was deliberately established as a neutral administrative zone free from ethnic or religious dominance.

Several commentators have warned that unchecked religious interference in civil matters could further deepen distrust among Nigeria’s diverse faith communities. Some civic groups have already called on the Presidency and the Minister of the FCT to intervene and ensure that justice is served without bias.

Calls for Federal Action

Amid growing public anger, advocacy groups and religious organisations have called on President Tinubu’s administration to reaffirm Nigeria’s secular foundation and ensure that the judicial system upholds constitutional integrity.

As Akahi News continues to follow the story, demands are mounting for transparency, restitution for the affected man, and disciplinary measures against any officials found culpable.

This incident, if proven true, could become a defining test for Nigeria’s commitment to equality, religious neutrality, and justice in governance.
