By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde will embark on a one-month vacation starting Friday, August 29, 2025, and has officially handed over executive powers to his deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal, who will serve as Acting Governor during the period.
The decision was formally communicated to the Oyo State House of Assembly through a letter read by the Speaker, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, during Tuesday’s plenary session. Governor Makinde’s letter cited Section 190(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which mandates state governors to notify their assemblies before proceeding on leave or vacation.
“I hereby transmit that during the period indicated above, the Deputy Governor, Barrister Bayo Lawal, shall serve as Acting Governor. I shall resume duty upon my return from vacation on Monday, 29th September 2025,” the governor’s letter stated in part.
The Oyo State House of Assembly has acknowledged receipt of the communication and assured full cooperation to ensure a seamless transition of duties during the governor’s absence. With this arrangement, Barrister Lawal will oversee all executive affairs of the state from August 29 to September 29, 2025.
The Assembly also confirmed that it will reconvene for plenary on September 16, 2025, to continue legislative activities. Analysts note that this temporary handover reflects adherence to constitutional governance in Oyo State, ensuring continuity of administration while the governor is away.
