The Deputy National Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Okechukwu Osuoha, has called on Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to return to office with renewed dedication to the party, peace, and accountability as the six-month emergency rule in the state comes to an end.

Akahi News gathered that President Bola Tinubu had, in March, declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, temporarily suspending democratic governance for six months. With no extension granted, the governor is now expected to resume his constitutional duties immediately.

“The issue is that there was an emergency declaration by the President, constitutionally allowed. He has to come back to office because the suspension was for six months, and there has been no extension,” Osuoha explained.

Call for Reconciliation and Stability

Osuoha stressed that Fubara’s return should mark a turning point for the oil-rich state, urging him to work towards peace, unity, and collaboration with key stakeholders.

“Every Nigerian expects a cordial relationship between the executive and the legislative arms of Rivers State, between the governor and the House of Assembly,” he said, noting the need for the governor to also reconcile with his political benefactors for the sake of stability.

“There must be peace and unity in the state so that development can take place because Rivers has suffered a lot,” he added.

Party Loyalty Comes First

The PDP chieftain further emphasised the importance of party loyalty, urging Fubara to fully align with PDP activities to strengthen internal cohesion.

“He is still a member of the PDP and should participate fully in party affairs. Party is supreme. If you have any problem, the party will come to your rescue and support you. I want to see him participating fully in the PDP so Nigerians will know he belongs to the party,” Osuoha stated.

Looking Ahead

Political observers believe the end of the emergency rule presents Fubara with a unique opportunity to reset relations with the State Assembly, party leaders, and the electorate while prioritising governance and development after months of political uncertainty.
