Peter Obi Warns Against Democracy’s Decline, Cites Nigeria as Example

Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised concerns over the declining state of democracy in Nigeria, describing it as a system drifting away from its core principles of accountability and service to the people.
Obi made this assertion on Tuesday, 17th September, during the 2025 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Annual Democracy Dialogue in Accra, Ghana. The international conference focused on the theme “What Makes Democracy Die?” and brought together leaders, scholars, and activists from across Africa.
“Democracy Dies Without Accountability,” Obi Says
In his post on Facebook, Obi stressed that democracy thrives only when it prioritises the needs of citizens, ensures security, provides education and healthcare, and fights poverty. He warned that democracy dies when leaders stop being accountable and when governance no longer serves the people’s interests.
According to him, “Nigeria is a typical example of where democracy is dying because it no longer serves the needs of the people and is no longer accountable to them. It has become a process of elite state capture, granting access to public resources for personal and family interests.”
Call for Electoral Reforms and Leadership with Integrity
Obi emphasised that reversing the decline of democracy in Nigeria requires citizens to take elections seriously by voting for leaders with competence, capacity, character, compassion, and commitment to genuine service.
He concluded with optimism, saying, “A new Nigeria is possible.”
