According to the statement obtained by Akahi News, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, described the officer’s behaviour as “unprofessional and unbecoming of a police officer.” He stressed that no member of the Force is permitted to use firearms without adhering strictly to Force Order 237, which outlines the lawful use of weapons by police personnel.
“The Command condemns his act in totality as no policeman has the right to use his firearm without recourse to Force Order 237,” the statement read. “It is the duty of every Nigerian Police officer to protect lives and property and not to put the life of anybody in danger.”
Officer Under Investigation
The Police Command disclosed that internal disciplinary measures have been set in motion, and the erring officer has been queried and taken into custody pending the outcome of a full investigation.
The Command further revealed that the officer was responding to a reported hit-and-run incident at the time, but reiterated that such circumstances do not justify the reckless discharge of a firearm.
“Although the policeman was responding to a case of a hit-and-run accident, no policeman is allowed to use his firearm without justification,” the PPRO stated.
CP Reassures Public of Accountability
Commissioner Abaniwonda assured Delta residents that the officer will be dealt with according to the Police Act and regulations, adding that such misconduct will not be tolerated under his watch.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to upholding professionalism and ensuring that officers act within the law, noting that protection of life and property remains the Command’s top priority.
“The officer concerned will be dealt with in accordance with the extant laws as stipulated in the Police Act and regulations to serve as a deterrent to others,” the statement concluded.
The Delta State Police Command’s swift action has been widely viewed as a necessary step towards rebuilding public trust in law enforcement and ensuring accountability within the Force.
