Public Outrage as Man Caught Preparing Dog Meat as ‘Suya’ Near Kano Secretariat
In a disturbing turn of events that has sparked widespread outrage online, a man has been caught allegedly preparing dog meat disguised as suya (grilled meat skewers) near the Audu Bako Secretariat in Kano State.

The incident came to public attention after a photo of the suspect went viral on social media, showing him in the act of butchering what appeared to be a dog carcass by an open roadside grill. Eyewitnesses say the man was apprehended by passersby who grew suspicious of the meat’s appearance and the manner in which it was being handled.
Reports suggest that he had been selling the illicit meat to unsuspecting customers under the guise of traditional suya—a popular delicacy in Northern Nigeria typically made from beef, goat, or ram. The discovery has raised serious concerns over food safety, public health, and ethical practices in meat vending.
Authorities in Kano have since begun investigations into the matter, with health officials warning residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious meat vendors operating in their areas. While dog meat is consumed in some parts of Nigeria, it remains a controversial practice and is largely frowned upon in most Northern states, especially when sold without disclosure.
The Kano State Government, through its public health department, has reiterated its commitment to enforcing food safety regulations and has urged the public to only patronise licensed meat vendors.
