Rev. Fr. Peter Oluseyi Adeyemi’s Homily on the 12th Sunday of Year B

Rev. Fr. Peter Oluseyi Adeyemi’s Homily on the 12th Sunday of Year B at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Pro-cathedral Church, Lagere, Ile-Ife.

Ile-Ife, Nigeria — On the 12th Sunday of Year B, Rev. Fr. Peter Oluseyi Adeyemi, the Parish Priest of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Pro-cathedral Church in Lagere, Ile-Ife, delivered a thought-provoking homily that resonated deeply with his congregation. Drawing from the Bible passages Job 38:1, 8-11, 2 Corinthians 5:14-17, and Mark 4:35-41, Fr. Adeyemi expounded on Christ’s authority over nature and the importance of unwavering faith amidst life’s tempests.

Reflecting on the Gospel of Mark, Fr. Adeyemi emphasized the disciples’ desperate plea to Jesus during the storm, “Teacher, you don’t even care if we perish?” He described this as a sarcastic statement, illustrating the disciples’ panic and lack of faith. “Storms can rise up from any angle,” he noted, urging the faithful to follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit and maintain their focus on God, even when it seems He is asleep. “No, He is not,” the cleric reassured, emphasizing God’s constant presence and care.

Fr. Adeyemi drew a parallel between the disciples staying in the boat with Christ and contemporary Catholics facing challenges. “When we face trouble, we run to where there is no Christ,” he warned, condemning the reliance on traditional healers such as Babalawo and Juju priests. He also cautioned against seeking solace outside of God’s will, especially in matters of marriage. “Some, in the family, if there is a little quarrel, the man or the woman will jump out of marriage against the will of God to another woman or man, thinking there is safety,” he admonished.

Quoting Psalm 50:15, “Call on me in times of trouble; I will answer you,” and Psalm 55:22, “Cast your burden on me,” alongside 1 Peter 5:7, “God cares for us,” Fr. Adeyemi reiterated God’s promise of support and care. He encouraged his parishioners to be industrious, particularly in the face of Nigeria’s challenging economic situation, likening their struggles to a storm. “When you work, you can’t go hungry,” he said, urging them to remain calm and trust in God’s provision and blessings.

In conclusion, Fr. Adeyemi affirmed that with Christ in their lives, their “boat cannot capsize,” and they must not panic when life’s storms arise. This, he said, is a fundamental teaching of the Catholic Church. He ended his homily with a brief prayer, seeking God’s guidance and protection for his congregation.

The homily, marked by its poignant reflections and practical advice, left a lasting impression on the parishioners, reinforcing their faith and resilience in the face of life’s inevitable challenges.
