Rivers Police Arrest Two Suspected Members of Six-Man Kidnap Syndicate

The Command’s spokesperson, ASP Blessing Agabe, said the victim, identified as Hassan, was abducted on September 6, 2026, around the vicinity of Fidelity Bank in the Garrison area of Port Harcourt.

According to the police, the victim was subsequently taken to Igbugulu Waterside in the Borikiri area of the city, where he was held captive for three days.

He was reportedly released after his relatives paid a ransom of ₦10.3 million to the abductors.

The police said it received credible information about the incident on September 7 and immediately commenced intelligence-led operations to identify those responsible for the abduction.

The investigation eventually led to the arrest of two suspected members of the alleged syndicate.

The suspects were identified as 24-year-old Victor Ifeanyi, also known as “Big Boby”, and 36-year-old Aniekan Okon Michael, also known as “Duff Man”.

Ifeanyi is reportedly from Aguleri Community in Otuocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, while Michael is from Ikot Ukpor in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The police said preliminary investigations indicated that both suspects allegedly confessed to their involvement in the kidnapping operation.

The suspects also reportedly told investigators that the criminal group comprised six members and that the gang used a white mini-bus, popularly known as a Keke bus, during the operation.

The Command said investigations were continuing as efforts had been intensified to identify, locate and arrest the remaining members of the alleged syndicate.

The development is significant because the police operation appears to have moved beyond the recovery of a single victim to the investigation of the wider network allegedly responsible for the abduction.

Kidnapping syndicates often depend on different individuals performing specific roles, including surveillance, transportation, confinement of victims and ransom collection. Consequently, identifying and apprehending other alleged members could provide investigators with further information about the organisation and activities of the group.

The reported payment of ₦10.3 million in ransom also illustrates the financial burden kidnapping continues to impose on families in affected communities.

Beyond the immediate trauma suffered by victims, ransom payments can create severe financial difficulties for families and potentially encourage criminal groups to view kidnapping as a profitable enterprise.

However, the arrest of two suspects does not by itself establish their guilt. The suspects remain allegations until their cases are properly investigated and, where charges are filed, determined by a competent court.

This distinction remains important in reporting criminal investigations, particularly where suspects are said to have made confessional statements. Such statements are subject to investigation and due legal process.

The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, appealed to members of the public to provide credible information that could assist the police in identifying and apprehending criminal elements.

He assured residents that information supplied to the police would be treated with the necessary confidentiality.

The Commissioner also reiterated the Command’s commitment to deploying intelligence-led operations to disrupt kidnapping syndicates and other criminal networks operating across Rivers State.

The latest arrests therefore represent a potentially important development in the investigation of the September abduction, but the effectiveness of the operation will ultimately depend on whether the remaining alleged members of the syndicate are identified and brought before the law.

For residents of Port Harcourt and surrounding communities, sustained intelligence gathering, prompt reporting of suspicious activities and effective cooperation between the public and security agencies remain essential in preventing further kidnappings.
