In a major step towards tackling post-harvest losses and strengthening food security, the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday inaugurated a fleet of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered trucks at the official launch of the N500 billion ‘Produce for Lagos’ Offtake Guarantee Fund and Programme.

A group of officials and stakeholders, including Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, gathered to inaugurate a fleet of CNG-powered trucks, standing before the vehicles at a ceremonial event in Lagos.

The ceremony, held in Lagos, marked a significant milestone in the state’s agricultural value chain strategy and aligns with the Federal Government’s broader Renewed Hope Agenda spearheaded by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the newly introduced CNG trucks will facilitate the nationwide transportation of food to Lagos, with a focus on minimising post-harvest losses and ensuring consistent supply to the state, which remains the country’s largest consumer market.

Speaking at the launch, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted Lagos’ central role in Nigeria’s food economy, stating:

“Lagos is Nigeria’s food market, and we consume over 50 per cent of the food that is traded in the Southwest part of the country.”

He described the programme as a proactive solution to logistical challenges that have long plagued Nigeria’s food distribution network, stressing that it will encourage production across key agricultural zones while ensuring that perishable produce reaches markets in optimal condition.

The ‘Produce for Lagos’ initiative, backed by a N500 billion guarantee fund, is designed to incentivise farmers and producers nationwide, assuring them of reliable offtake and reducing the financial risks associated with food distribution.

Governor Sanwo-Olu further reaffirmed the state’s commitment to environmental sustainability, noting that the adoption of CNG-powered trucks supports Lagos’ green transport agenda while reducing carbon emissions associated with traditional diesel freight systems.

Stakeholders present at the event commended the initiative, describing it as timely and transformative, particularly in light of growing concerns over inflation, food accessibility, and agricultural waste.
