The incident, captured in a video that has since gone viral on social media, shows the senior officer confronting the uniformed policeman who had allegedly collected money from a driver before allowing him to continue his journey.

In the footage, the visibly angry senior officer demanded that the money be returned immediately, questioning the integrity and conduct of his subordinate. He wondered why a police officer entrusted with maintaining law and order would be involved in acts of corruption that damage the reputation of the entire police force.

“You are spoiling the image of the police,” the senior officer said, challenging the junior officer to explain why he collected money from a driver who had not committed any offence. When asked if he purchased anything from the driver, the officer admitted that he had not, further confirming the illegitimacy of the act.

The intervention by the senior officer has sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians applauding his boldness in addressing corruption within the force. Others, however, called for stricter disciplinary measures to ensure that such incidents are not only stopped on the spot but also punished in line with police regulations.

Extortion by security operatives, particularly against commercial drivers, remains a major concern in Nigeria, with civil society groups and road transport unions frequently raising alarms about the practice. Critics argue that the continuous reports of officers collecting money from drivers at checkpoints have eroded public trust in the police and undermined the campaign against corruption.

The video of the confrontation is already trending, with many Nigerians sharing it as an example of accountability in action. Observers note that while the senior officer’s intervention is commendable, there is a need for systemic reforms to ensure that cases of extortion do not persist unchecked.

The Nigeria Police Force has yet to issue an official statement regarding the viral incident.
