There was mild drama on Tuesday in Abuja as Philip Shaibu and Omobayo Godwins clashed over who should represent Edo State at the Former Deputy Governors’ Forum during its fourth annual national conference.

According to information gathered by Akahi News, tension began when Omobayo was introduced as the former deputy governor at the event, prompting Shaibu to object publicly. The situation briefly turned chaotic as both men exchanged words over legitimacy before calm was restored.
Shaibu Rejects Omobayo’s Introduction
Speaking after the incident, Shaibu insisted that the introduction was improper, stressing that Omobayo was never duly elected but brought into office through what he described as the “backdoor.”
He said a court judgment had already declared his impeachment illegal and affirmed that the office of the Edo State Deputy Governor was never vacant. Shaibu maintained that he remains the legally recognised deputy governor and accused the organisers of the forum of misrepresentation.
Omobayo Calls for Calm, Describes Clash as Embarrassing
Responding, Omobayo stated that he never appointed himself as deputy governor, describing the confrontation as “almost a national disgrace.” He explained that he had chosen to remain calm despite what he considered an unnecessary provocation.
Omobayo said, “I did not make myself deputy governor. I was called upon to serve, and I did. Today’s event should not have turned into a scene, but I’ll always choose peace.”
Background to the Edo Political Dispute
Akahi News recalls that Philip Shaibu was impeached as Edo State Deputy Governor in April 2024 and replaced by Omobayo Godwins. However, a court later ruled that Shaibu’s impeachment was unlawful and reinstated him, setting the stage for continued confusion over the rightful holder of the office.
Analysts Urge Restraint
Political analysts who spoke with Akahi News noted that the incident reflects deep political divisions in Edo State. They urged both leaders to exercise restraint and focus on unity rather than personal rivalry, warning that public confrontations could further tarnish the state’s political image ahead of the 2025 elections.
