Simon Ekpa Sentenced to Six Years’ Imprisonment for Terrorism in Finland

A Finnish district court has sentenced Simon Ekpa, a prominent leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to six years in prison on terrorism charges.
Arrest and Investigation
Mr Ekpa was apprehended by Finnish authorities on 21 November 2024, following an extensive investigation by the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI). The probe revealed that he had allegedly incited terrorism and promoted violence via social media, actions believed to have contributed to unrest in southeastern Nigeria.
Court Proceedings and Ruling
The Päijät-Häme District Court remanded Mr Ekpa in custody and confirmed that the charges were linked to “public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent” spanning from August 2021 to November 2024. During the trial, the NBI also froze Ekpa’s financial assets, along with those of his associates and affiliated companies.
Context in Nigeria
Back in Nigeria, the founder of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, remains in detention under the custody of the State Security Service (SSS) over terrorism-related allegations brought by the Nigerian government.
