Sule Lamido Declares Bid for PDP National Chairmanship, Promises to Rebuild Party
Former governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, has formally declared his intention to contest for the position of National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), expressing confidence in his capacity to rebuild and reposition the party ahead of future elections.

The veteran politician, who also served as Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and is one of the founding members of the PDP, made the announcement on Monday via his verified Facebook page. He revealed that he would visit the PDP’s national secretariat, Wadata Plaza in Abuja, to obtain his nomination form.
“By the grace of God, I shall today, Monday, 27th October 2025, by 11 a.m., be at Wadata Plaza, the national headquarters of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party, to purchase the nomination form to run for the office of national chairman,” Lamido wrote.
He emphasised his unwavering commitment to strengthening democracy and restoring the PDP to its “old glory,” describing his ambition as part of a broader vision to unify and revitalise the party’s structures nationwide.
Lamido said his decision to enter the race was driven by the need to promote internal democracy and prepare the PDP for the challenges of upcoming national and state elections.
The opposition party, which governed Nigeria from 1999 to 2015, is set to elect a new National Working Committee (NWC) at its forthcoming national convention scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
In August, the PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) zoned its presidential ticket to the South, while the position of national chairman was zoned to the North in line with the party’s rotational arrangement. The role was further micro-zoned to the North-West, placing Lamido alongside other political heavyweights such as former Kaduna State governor Ahmed Makarfi and former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Turaki, among those reportedly eyeing the chairmanship seat.
As a prominent figure from Jigawa, a key state in the North-West geopolitical zone, Lamido’s declaration is expected to reshape the dynamics of the PDP’s internal politics ahead of the convention.
