Suspected Bandits Attack Wedding in Katsina Amid Controversial Planned Pardon

At least two people have been killed and several others injured after suspected bandits attacked a wedding convoy in Unguwar Nagunda, Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State. Several wedding guests, including the bride, were reportedly abducted during the assault, raising fresh concerns over the effectiveness of ongoing peace initiatives in the state.

Attack Raises Security Concerns

A Katsina-based security analyst, Malam Bakatsine, told Akahi News that residents reported heavy gunfire and widespread panic during the attack. “At least two people were killed, several others injured including the bride, and an unknown number of wedding guests were abducted,” he said. Families are still attempting to confirm the exact number of those taken.

The attack comes at a time when the Katsina State Government is preparing to pardon 70 detained individuals suspected of banditry, a measure it describes as part of a broader peace deal aimed at encouraging armed groups to lay down their weapons.

Government Explains Pardon

Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Muazu, defended the planned release, explaining that it is intended to consolidate accords reached between affected communities and repentant bandits across multiple local government areas. According to Muazu, the peace initiative—covering at least 15 local government areas—has already facilitated the release of about 1,000 abducted individuals.

He likened the initiative to prisoner exchanges typically seen in wartime or in negotiations with insurgent groups. “All over the world, after wars, prisoner exchanges usually take place. During Nigeria’s civil war, prisoners were exchanged, just as it happened in negotiations involving Boko Haram,” Muazu stated.

Controversial Judicial Request

The controversy surrounding the pardon intensified after SaharaReporters obtained a “SECRET” letter dated January 2, 2026, from the Katsina State Ministry of Justice to the Chief Judge of the state. Signed by Director of Public Prosecutions, Abdur-Rahman Umar, Esq., the letter requested judicial intervention via the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee (ACJMC) to facilitate the release of the suspects.

The document included a list of 48 individuals accused of banditry-related offences, most of whom are awaiting trial at various Magistrate Courts, while a separate list of 22 inmates currently facing trial in High Courts was also submitted for release under the peace arrangement.

Public Reaction and Criticism

The disclosure has sparked outrage among legal practitioners, civil society groups, and members of the public. Critics argue that releasing suspects accused of serious crimes—some already standing trial—could undermine the rule of law, deny justice to victims, and embolden criminal networks.

Despite these concerns, Muazu insisted that the initiative has produced tangible results and remains a lawful effort to sustain peace in affected communities.

Ongoing Violence Questions Effectiveness

The recent wedding attack underscores ongoing insecurity in Katsina, with residents of Unguwar Nagunda, Mabai, and neighbouring areas reporting continued killings, abductions, and attacks. The timing of the assault, coinciding with the planned pardon, has raised questions about the reality of improved security on the ground and whether such initiatives can prevent further violence.

The Katsina State Police Command had yet to respond to calls for comment at the time of filing this report.
