Peter Obi Condemns Ibom Air Lifetime Ban on Young Passenger

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticised the lifetime ban imposed on a young Nigerian woman, Ms. Comfort Emmanson, by Ibom Air, describing the decision as a striking example of selective justice in Nigeria.

Obi stated that while the passenger’s behaviour on the flight was wrong, the speed and severity of the punishment stood in sharp contrast to the lack of accountability for the powerful when they commit more serious offences.

Concerns Over Due Process and Selective Justice

In a statement, Obi questioned the process that led to the decision, asking whether avenues of justice and compassionate resolution had been exhausted before imposing such a severe sanction. He likened the situation to the ancient words of Anacharsis, who said the law is like a spider’s web—catching the weak while the powerful break through.

He noted the irony that a young woman in her twenties could be banned for life overnight, while those in positions of authority who commit greater offences move freely and without consequence.

A Call for Fairness, Compassion, and Rehabilitation

Obi stressed the need for justice that is both consistent and compassionate, with room for rehabilitation and understanding, particularly when misconduct stems from frustration or displaced aggression.

“Justice must be consistent, or it becomes oppression in disguise. Power must never determine who is punished and who is pardoned. May God heal our land. A new Nigeria is possible,” he said.
