According to Eyes of Lagos, the incident occurred last Saturday when Gbenga and his friends placed a bet, challenging one another to carry multiple 50kg cement bags. The reward for the winner was to be the group’s mobile phones.

Driven by adrenaline and the desire to impress his peers, Gbenga attempted to carry all four bags — a staggering total weight of 200kg, nearly three times the average man’s body weight. A now-viral video showed him successfully hoisting the bags for a few seconds before suddenly collapsing under the immense weight.

Eyewitnesses reported that the pressure severely affected his spine and nervous system, leaving him unable to move or speak properly.

Failed Rescue Attempts

Panicked friends reportedly tried to revive him by pouring water on his body and pulling him upright, but their efforts were in vain. Gbenga was later taken for medical care but succumbed to his injuries by Wednesday, leaving his family, friends, and the wider community in deep mourning.

A Sobering Lesson for Youths

The incident has sparked intense debate on social media, with many Nigerians warning against reckless dares, peer pressure, and the growing trend of clout-chasing challenges.

Commentators stressed that no temporary thrill, viral attention, or material reward is worth risking one’s life and health. Safety experts have also urged young people to resist such dangerous stunts, emphasising the need for greater awareness about the physical limits of the human body.

Gbenga’s death now stands as a grim reminder of the irreversible consequences that can arise from impulsive decisions made in the name of entertainment or bravado.
