UEFA Europa League: Meet 19-Year-Old Jimoh Aloba, Aston Villa’s Nigerian Match Winner in Salzburg

Aston Villa’s 19-year-old attacking midfielder, Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba, announced himself to European football fans on Thursday night, scoring the decisive goal in a thrilling 3–2 comeback victory over Red Bull Salzburg in the UEFA Europa League.

The teenager’s dramatic strike capped a remarkable turnaround for Unai Emery’s side, who had found themselves 2–0 down early in the second half before mounting a spirited fightback that ultimately secured second place in their Europa League group.

Jimoh-Aloba was introduced in the 66th minute, replacing Ollie Watkins, who had been forced off due to injury. His entrance injected new energy into a Villa side struggling to gain momentum, and the young midfielder made an immediate impact.

Akahi News gathered that after goals from Morgan Rogers and Tyrone Mings levelled the score, Jimoh-Aloba struck in the 87th minute to secure the victory, sending Villa Park fans into a frenzy.

At full-time, team-mate Amadou Onana guided the teenager towards the Holte End, where he received a rapturous ovation from supporters celebrating the European debut heroics.

“It’s a proud moment for me on my European debut,” Jimoh-Aloba said after the match. “Really nice to make my family proud. I’ve had a lot of lows and highs this season, but this is right at the top. My mum is in the stand somewhere.”

Rising Star with Nigerian Roots

Born to Nigerian heritage, Jimoh-Aloba joined Aston Villa from West Bromwich Albion in 2023 at just 16 years old. He had already represented England at Under-16 and Under-17 levels before moving to Villa, signalling his promise at an early age.

Akahi News gathered that he signed a long-term contract with Villa in October 2024 and played a key role in their FA Youth Cup triumph last season, scoring in the final against Manchester City.

He made his senior debut in the Carabao Cup against Wycombe Wanderers and recently featured in the Premier League against Arsenal. His goal against Salzburg marked his first in major European competition, making him the fourth-youngest player to score for Aston Villa in Europe.

Praise from Teammates and Manager

Morgan Rogers, who shared time with Jimoh-Aloba in West Brom’s academy, commended the teenager’s professionalism and potential.

“He’s a really nice kid. He works hard in training and gives his all. He might be shy and nervous, but he shows his quality. Moments like this will bring him out of his shell,” Rogers said.

Villa manager Unai Emery highlighted the importance of giving young players opportunities on big occasions. Akahi News gathered that Emery was pleased with how Jimoh-Aloba and fellow academy graduates seized their chance to impress on the European stage.

A Defining Moment for Villa and Nigeria

For Jimoh-Aloba, the match-winning goal in Salzburg could be a defining moment — not only for his career at Aston Villa but also as a Nigerian-born talent beginning to leave a mark on European football.

The young midfielder’s rise is closely watched by fans and pundits alike, and many now see him as one of Villa’s most promising prospects for the future.

As he continues to develop, Akahi News gathered that Jimoh-Aloba is expected to play a bigger role in Villa’s domestic and European campaigns, inspiring a new generation of Nigerian footballers aspiring to make their mark abroad.
