Woman Jailed for Falsely Accusing 10 Men of Rape

A 31-year-old woman from Farnworth, Bolton, has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison after making false rape allegations against 10 men over a six-year period.

Stacey Sharples pleaded guilty at Bolton Crown Court to 10 counts of perverting the course of justice, admitting that her claims were fabricated. The false allegations, made between 2013 and 2019, led to the arrest of multiple men, some of whom were subjected to intimate examinations, while others experienced severe personal and professional consequences.

Impact on the Victims

Greater Manchester Police highlighted the devastating effects on the men involved, including job loss, relationship breakdowns, estrangement from family, and declines in mental health. Several victims provided statements detailing the profound disruption to their lives:

  • Reece Lockett said: “My life was turned upside down the day I was falsely accused of rape. My mum and dad disowned me. My partner of five years left me. I lost my part-time job.”
  • Astron Inman shared: “Words can’t describe the torment my head has gone through. I moved to Sweden not long after to re-evaluate my life and wasn’t a part of my children’s lives for a couple of years. My love life had dramatically fallen, I have been single ever since and find it hard how to approach the opposite sex.”

Police Investigation

Detective Sergeant Steven Gilliland, who led the investigation, said Sharples was given multiple opportunities to explain the allegations, but evidence consistently contradicted her claims. “Ultimately, as the evidence continued to demonstrate that the reports were untrue, coupled with the desire for justice from some of the men who had been falsely accused, it was right that we followed the evidence and pursued the individual who had actually committed a criminal offence,” he said.

Gilliland paid tribute to the strength and dignity of the men who endured the ordeal, while urging real victims of sexual violence not to be discouraged from coming forward. “The actions of Miss Sharples should not stop anyone from seeking support, whether that be from police, a charity or support service,” he said.

Wider Implications

Greater Manchester Police warned that false accusations undermine the credibility of genuine victims and divert crucial resources from investigating legitimate reports of sexual offences. The time spent probing Sharples’ claims, they said, could have been better spent supporting actual survivors and holding real offenders accountable.

Sharples’ sentence reflects the serious consequences of perverting the course of justice and serves as a reminder of the profound impact false accusations can have on innocent lives.
