Yala Unity Cup: Semi-Final Fixtures Set as Okuku FC Triumphs Over Yache FC
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
The Yala Unity Cup Tournament has entered a decisive stage following the conclusion of the quarter-finals at the Onah Edrah Resort in Okpoma, Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State.
In one of the standout clashes, Okuku Ward FC delivered a solid performance, securing a 2-0 victory against Yache FC to advance into the semi-finals. The win was met with celebrations from fans who hailed Okuku FC’s display of teamwork, discipline, and determination.
Semi-Final Line-Up Announced
In line with the tournament’s mission of fostering unity and fairness among the Yala people, the Central Planning Committee, chaired by the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Youths and Sports, Comrade Solomon Ada, has unveiled a revised format for the semi-finals.
According to the committee, the adjustment was necessary since the four qualifying teams were evenly split between the Ukelle Axis and the Yala-speaking Axis. To maintain balance and ensure inclusivity, the fixtures have been arranged so that both axes will meet in the finals and the third-place match.
Comrade Solomon Ada explained that the structure was designed “to uphold the vision of the Yala Unity Cup, which is to use sports as a tool for promoting togetherness, fairness, and peaceful coexistence among the people.”
The Fixtures
The semi-final matches will take place on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at the Onah Edrah Resort, Okpoma, as follows:
- Wanikade FC (Ukelle) vs Ijiraga FC (Ukelle)
- Time: 2:00 pm
- Okuku FC (Yala 1) vs Echumofona FC (Yala 1)
- Time: 4:00 pm
This arrangement guarantees that the final will feature one team from the Yala-speaking Axis and another from the Ukelle Axis, ensuring representation and balance in the competition’s closing stages.
Building Bridges Through Sports
The Yala Unity Cup, now gaining recognition as one of the region’s key grassroots sporting events, has continued to emphasise values of harmony, peace, and development. By drawing participation from diverse communities, it offers young people the opportunity to showcase their talent while fostering social integration.
As the tournament heads into its semi-finals, excitement is building among football lovers and community members who see the competition not just as a game, but as a platform for promoting unity in Yala Local Government Area.
All eyes are now on August 27, when the teams will battle for a place in the finals and the chance to lift the coveted Unity Cup.
