2025 WAEC GCE: Only Four Approved Centres in Cross River State as Students from Ogoja, Yala LGA Lament Distance to Calabar
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
Candidates preparing for the 2025 WAEC GCE Second Series in Cross River State are raising concerns over the limited number of approved examination centres, following the release of the official list by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

Akahi News gathered that only four Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres have been approved for the entire state—all located in Calabar Municipal, the state capital. This development has sparked complaints from candidates in far-flung areas, especially those in the Ogoja axis of Yala Local Government Area, who say they will have to travel long distances to access any of the approved centres.
Candidate Laments Distance from Ogoja to Calabar
A young candidate from the Ogoja axis expressed frustration, noting that the journey to Calabar involves not only financial cost but also time and safety concerns:
“It’s discouraging that we have to travel all the way to Calabar for a WAEC GCE exam. It is not easy for students like us who stay in Ogoja and Yala. We need more centres closer to our area so that candidates can write the exam without this stress,” he said.
Many parents and students in Northern Cross River share the same sentiment, urging WAEC and relevant authorities to decentralise the centres to include locations such as Ogoja, Obudu, and Ikom to reduce the strain on rural candidates.
Approved Centres in Cross River State for 2025 WAEC GCE
According to WAEC, the following centres in Calabar Municipal have been approved for the 2025 WAEC GCE Second Series in Cross River State:
- National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) Calabar Study Centre – Computer Based
- University of Calabar (UNICAL) CBT Centre – Computer Based
- University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) CBT Centre – Computer Based
- Swiftcom Global CBT Centre, Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria Secondary School, IBB Way, Calabar – Computer Based
Calls for More Centres Across the State
Education stakeholders have called on WAEC to expand its coverage across Cross River to make the examination more accessible. Many believe that creating additional centres in strategic locations would ease the financial and logistical burden on students from remote areas.
Until such measures are taken, candidates from the Ogoja axis and other northern parts of the state will continue to make the long journey to Calabar for their WAEC GCE examinations.
