2027: APC Risks Electoral Backlash If It Drops Northern Muslim From Tinubu’s Ticket — Musawa Warns

The Minister of Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, has cautioned the All Progressives Congress (APC) against dropping a Northern Muslim from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election ticket ahead of the 2027 general election, warning that such a move could significantly weaken the party’s electoral chances.

Musawa made the remarks during a recent episode of Mic On Show with journalist Seun Okinbaloye, amid rising political speculation that the ruling party may reconsider the Muslim-Muslim ticket adopted during the 2023 presidential election.

Akahi News gathered that the minister’s comments reflect growing internal debates within the APC over zoning, regional balance, and electoral strategy as early permutations for 2027 begin to take shape.

‘Dropping a Northern Muslim Creates a Political Hurdle’

According to Musawa, removing Vice President Kashim Shettima or replacing him with a non-Northern Muslim running mate would pose a serious political challenge for the APC, particularly across the core northern states where voting patterns are heavily influenced by identity, trust, and long-standing political alignments.

“If there is no Hausa, Fulani or Kanuri Muslim on that ticket, it creates a hurdle. That is the reality of the way people think,” Musawa was quoted as saying.

She stressed that politics in Northern Nigeria is deeply rooted, layered, and highly sophisticated, warning that strategic decisions taken without a proper understanding of the region’s social and political dynamics could easily backfire.

Akahi News learnt that the minister believes electoral behaviour in the North cannot be separated from historical affiliations, religious identity, and grassroots loyalty networks that have been cultivated over decades.

APC Faces Growing Debate Over 2027 Ticket Configuration

The comments come at a time when conversations are quietly gaining momentum within political circles about whether the APC should retain the Muslim-Muslim ticket that secured victory in the 2023 presidential election or adopt a different formula to broaden national appeal in 2027.

While supporters of a revised ticket argue that inclusivity and regional balancing could strengthen national unity and expand electoral reach, others insist that altering the existing configuration may alienate key voting blocs that remain crucial to the party’s electoral success.

Political observers note that the North remains a decisive voting region in Nigeria’s presidential elections, often delivering large voter turnout and commanding significant influence in determining national outcomes.

Akahi News gathered that any miscalculation in managing northern political sentiments could expose the APC to avoidable electoral risks, particularly as opposition parties intensify efforts to rebuild their structures ahead of 2027.

Northern Voting Behaviour Described as Strategic, Not Emotional

Musawa further emphasised that political choices in the North are not driven by emotion alone but by long-term calculations, community interests, and perceived representation at the federal level.

She cautioned party leaders against making assumptions about voter behaviour without appreciating the depth of political consciousness within the region.

According to her, failure to retain a recognisable Northern Muslim presence on the presidential ticket could weaken trust, dampen mobilisation, and affect voter enthusiasm across strategic northern constituencies.

Akahi News gathered that her intervention is already generating conversations among party stakeholders, policy analysts, and grassroots political actors who see the 2027 election as a critical test of the APC’s internal cohesion and strategic planning.

Implications for Tinubu’s Re-Election Strategy

As President Tinubu’s first term progresses, early political signals suggest that alliances, zoning calculations, and ticket composition will dominate internal party discussions in the coming years.

Maintaining party unity while balancing national expectations for inclusiveness remains a delicate challenge for the ruling party.

Musawa’s remarks underscore the political sensitivity surrounding succession planning and electoral strategy, especially in a diverse federation where regional perceptions often shape voting behaviour.

Akahi News learnt that how the APC manages these internal debates may ultimately determine not only its electoral prospects in 2027 but also its ability to sustain political stability and national cohesion.
