Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed Hosts Peter Obi, Calls for Opposition Unity Ahead of 2027
Bauchi, Nigeria – The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, on Friday received the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, at the Bauchi Government House. The meeting, which drew attention from political observers nationwide, underscored the growing calls for opposition consolidation ahead of the 2027 polls.

Welcoming Obi and members of the “Obedient” movement, Governor Mohammed emphasised the need for political harmony among Nigeria’s opposition parties, insisting that unity was crucial to offering Nigerians a credible alternative in the next election cycle.
“We have to harmonise our interests in the interest of the people of Nigeria,” Mohammed told journalists during an interactive session. “The opposition must come together. This ADC, PDP, and even the remaining political parties should come together. And we don’t even hate the present administration. We wish they would do better, but as I discussed with you, there’s no budget, there is no plan. Everything is about politics from day one. We must be cautious not to disparage our people. We have to unite the opposition, our ego, and our interests, so that we can present a common front to compete and take Nigeria to the promised land.”
The governor noted that Nigerians’ expectations for the 2027 general election were “very high” in light of the current economic hardship. “There is a lot of hunger and anger, and we don’t want to trigger unnecessary political tensions,” he warned. He then made a direct appeal to Obi to return to the PDP, saying, “So please come back. That’s where you belong. Don’t go anywhere that is in disarray.”
Responding, Obi explained that his visit to Bauchi was primarily to engage with youths in colleges of health as well as Almajiri communities, adding that he was impressed by the potential of the state’s young people. He also commended Governor Mohammed’s efforts in improving the education sector, describing them as “wonderful.”
When pressed on the political future of the country, Obi reiterated his long-standing position that Nigeria’s politics must evolve. “Our politics must change. It has to be politics of development, politics of competence, politics of capacity and compassion, where we care for other people,” he said.
Obi clarified that his visit to the Bauchi governor was both a courtesy call and an opportunity to discuss Nigeria’s pressing challenges. “How can we solve it together? That’s the key question,” he stated. He further underscored the importance of political alliances ahead of the 2027 general election, stressing that such partnerships should not be about “power grabbing” but rather about “bringing real changes and development.”
The meeting between Bala Mohammed and Peter Obi comes amid increasing political realignments, as opposition figures weigh the possibility of joint platforms to challenge the ruling party in 2027. Observers say the overtures made during the Bauchi meeting may mark an early stage in negotiations for a broader opposition coalition.
