Google Indexing Issues: Why Many Website Pages Remain Invisible Online
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
In a development raising concern among website owners and bloggers, many online publishers have reported that a significant number of their web pages are not appearing in Google search results, despite repeated indexing requests. The situation, which affects both new and existing content, has sparked a wave of troubleshooting efforts to understand and address the problem.

According to insights from digital marketing experts, the causes of such widespread indexing issues vary. One of the most common culprits is crawlability restrictions, where Google’s search bots are blocked from accessing a page due to errors in the site’s robots.txt file or the inclusion of “noindex” meta tags. These settings, often overlooked, can inadvertently instruct Google to ignore specific pages, rendering them invisible to search users.
The Google Search Console Coverage Report has emerged as a vital tool for diagnosis. By reviewing the “Not Indexed” section, website owners can see reasons such as “Crawled – currently not indexed” or “Discovered – currently not indexed,” both of which indicate that Google is aware of the page but has chosen not to index it yet. Other listed causes include blocking via robots.txt or explicit “noindex” commands, which must be removed for affected pages.
Experts further stress the importance of internal linking, advising that each page should be connected from at least two or three already-indexed pages, using descriptive anchor text. Poor internal navigation can lead to search engines undervaluing certain pages, especially when combined with thin or duplicate content. To counter this, content must be unique, in-depth, and of genuine value to the target audience.
Technical performance also plays a role. Websites that fail Google’s PageSpeed Insights or Mobile-Friendly Test may face reduced indexing priority, as slow loading times and poor mobile usability can negatively impact Google’s crawling frequency. Updating and resubmitting a well-structured sitemap in Google Search Console remains one of the most direct ways to guide search engines to important URLs.
For many affected publishers, the challenge is compounded by the fact that indexing is never instant. Even after implementing fixes, it can take days or weeks for changes to reflect in search results. Nonetheless, consistent application of these strategies—combined with building external backlinks to boost discovery—can accelerate recovery and ensure that valuable content does not remain buried in the digital shadows.
The ongoing struggle with indexing highlights a broader truth in digital publishing: visibility is not guaranteed, even for quality content. As search algorithms continue to evolve, mastering the technical foundations of SEO is no longer optional but essential for survival in the competitive online space.

You can submit an individual page of your website or blog for Google indexing through Google Search Console (GSC).
Here’s the exact process step-by-step:
1. Sign in to Google Search Console
- Go to Google Search Console.
- Sign in using the Google account linked to your site.
2. Add and Verify Your Website (If Not Already Done)
- If you haven’t already, click “Add property” and enter your site URL.
- Verify ownership (usually by adding an HTML tag to your site header, uploading an HTML file, or using your domain’s DNS).
3. Use the URL Inspection Tool
- On the left-hand menu, click “URL Inspection”.
- Paste the exact URL of the page you want indexed (e.g.,
https://www.example.com/my-article). - Press Enter.
4. Check if the Page Is Already Indexed
- Google will show whether the page is already in its index.
- If it’s not indexed, you’ll see a message like “URL is not on Google”.
5. Request Indexing
- Click “Request Indexing”.
- Google will test if the page can be indexed (checking for errors like blocked robots.txt or noindex tags).
- If everything is fine, the request will be submitted.
- Google will then queue it for crawling—sometimes within hours, sometimes a few days.
6. Speed Things Up (Optional)
To help Google find and index it faster:
- Add the page to your sitemap.xml file and resubmit your sitemap in GSC.
- Link to the new page from other already-indexed pages on your site.
- Share it on social media or other platforms to create backlinks.
💡 Note: Google indexing is not instant. Even after requesting, it can take from a few hours to several days for the page to appear in search results.
If most of your website pages are missing from Google’s index, it means something is blocking Google from crawling or indexing them — or Google doesn’t see them as valuable enough to index yet.
Here’s how to troubleshoot and fix it step-by-step:
1️⃣ Check Crawlability & Indexing Settings
- Robots.txt: Visit
https://yourdomain.com/robots.txtand make sure you’re not blocking important pages withDisallow:. - Meta Tags: Open the page source and check for
<meta name="robots" content="noindex">or<meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow">.
If found, remove them for pages you want indexed.
2️⃣ Use Google Search Console’s Coverage Report
- In GSC, go to Index → Pages (Coverage in older version).
- Look at “Not Indexed” reasons such as:
- Crawled – currently not indexed → Google saw the page but didn’t index it.
- Discovered – currently not indexed → Google found the URL but hasn’t crawled it yet.
- Excluded by ‘noindex’ tag → You have a noindex tag.
- Blocked by robots.txt → Your robots.txt file is blocking.
- Click each error type to see which URLs are affected.
3️⃣ Improve Internal Linking
- Link each page from at least 2–3 other pages already indexed by Google.
- Use descriptive anchor text instead of “click here”.
4️⃣ Check for Duplicate or Low-Value Content
- Pages with thin content, duplicate wording, or too many ads may be ignored by Google.
- Aim for unique, in-depth, and useful content on every page.
5️⃣ Submit an Updated Sitemap
- Ensure your
sitemap.xmlcontains all important URLs. - Resubmit it in Google Search Console under Index → Sitemaps.
- Remove outdated or broken URLs from the sitemap.
6️⃣ Check Page Speed & Mobile-Friendliness
- Use Google PageSpeed Insights and Mobile-Friendly Test.
- Slow or poorly optimised pages may be deprioritised.
7️⃣ Build External Links
- Share your content on social media, forums, or other websites.
- Backlinks help Google discover and prioritise indexing.
8️⃣ Patience & Consistency
- Even after fixes, indexing can take days to weeks.
- Keep publishing high-quality, linked, and shareable content.
