INEC Begins Second Phase of Nationwide Voter Registration Exercise
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the second phase of its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise across the country, in a renewed push to widen democratic participation ahead of future elections.
Akahi News learnt that the exercise resumed on Monday, following the conclusion of the first phase on December 10, 2025, which focused largely on online pre-registration and limited physical enrolment.

Strong Turnout Recorded in First Phase
INEC had earlier opened its online pre-registration portal on August 18, 2025, before extending the process to physical registration centres nationwide on August 25. According to figures released by the commission, no fewer than 9,891,801 Nigerians initiated the registration process online during the first phase.
However, only 2,572,054 registrations were fully completed as of November 28, 2025. Of this number, 1,503,832 registrations were finalised through the online platform, while 1,068,222 were concluded at physical registration centres across the country.
Why the Exercise Was Temporarily Suspended
INEC explained that the temporary suspension of the CVR was to allow the commission to carry out statutory procedures as required by law. Akahi News gathered that this included the public display of the voters’ register for claims and objections.
“In line with Section 19 of the Electoral Act 2022, the display of the register of voters for claims and objections was conducted from December 15 to 21, 2025, at local government area offices where the CVR exercise took place,” the commission stated.
INEC Urges Nigerians to Take Advantage
With the second phase now underway, INEC has called on eligible Nigerians who are yet to register to seize the opportunity to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). The commission also encouraged already registered voters to use the exercise to transfer their polling units or update personal details where necessary.
In addition, citizens who participated in the earlier phase were advised to verify their registration records, correct any errors, and report the names of ineligible or deceased persons found on the voters’ register.
Anambra, FCT Still on Hold
Despite the nationwide resumption, INEC clarified that CVR activities remain suspended in Anambra State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). According to the commission, this is due to ongoing electoral processes in the affected areas.
INEC assured that fresh dates for the resumption of voter registration in Anambra and the FCT would be announced in due course.
A Step Towards Inclusive Democracy
Observers believe the continuation of the CVR exercise reflects INEC’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process by ensuring broader voter inclusion and a more credible electoral register. As the exercise progresses, stakeholders are hopeful that more eligible Nigerians will take advantage of the opportunity to participate actively in the nation’s democratic journey.
