The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has dismissed widespread reports suggesting an imminent increase in the cost of application forms for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry (DE), reassuring Nigerians that fees are expected to remain unchanged.

In a clarification aimed at easing public anxiety, Akahi News gathered that the examination body stated it has not raised the cost of UTME or DE application documents in the last nine years. Instead, JAMB noted that registration fees have, in fact, been reduced during the period under the current administration.
No Fee Increase in Nine Years
According to details obtained by Akahi News, JAMB made the position known in its Weekly Bulletin, stressing that any speculation about a fee hike for the 2026 exercise is unfounded. The Board explained that registration costs have been carefully managed to remain affordable for candidates and their families despite prevailing economic pressures.
JAMB further clarified that any future review of fees would only be considered if it becomes absolutely necessary to maintain the integrity, security, and quality of its examination processes.
Tinubu’s Directive and Human-Face Policy
Akahi News learnt that the Board’s stance aligns with the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, communicated through the Minister of Education, which requires government agencies to operate with a human-face approach and remain sensitive to the economic realities confronting Nigerian households.
“This clarification is provided to properly guide members of the public who wish to plan ahead for the education of their children, as the cost implication for the 2026 exercise remains largely the same as that of the previous year,” the Board stated.
Registration Timeline and Advisory
JAMB urged parents and guardians to make early preparations for their wards, emphasising that the registration window will not be extended once it opens. Akahi News gathered that the 2026 UTME form will be on sale from Friday, January 31, 2026, and close on Saturday, March 8, 2026.
Despite what it described as a downward review of fees over the years, the Board said it has continued to operate prudently and efficiently, resulting in substantial remittances to the Federal Government.
Commitment to Transparency and Accountability
The examination body reaffirmed its commitment to accountability, transparency, and effective public-sector financial management, noting that affordability has not compromised global best practices in the conduct of its examinations.
JAMB maintained that it remains dedicated to fairness and transparency while ensuring that millions of candidates across the country continue to access higher education opportunities without undue financial burden.
