On Monday, youths in Osun State participating in the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest called for Nigerian politicians to be placed on the same salary scale as average civil servants. This demand was made on the fifth day of the nationwide hunger protest, which began on August 1, 2024, and is scheduled to last for ten days.

The protesters, who marched through various locations in Osun State, including Freedom Park, Olohunkoro, Igbona, Ayetoro, Stadium, and Testing Ground, are seeking an overhaul of policies that they believe are impoverishing the masses. Despite President Bola Tinubu’s assurance that their concerns are being heard, the youths continue to demonstrate.

Kola Ibrahim, one of the protest organizers, read out their demands to journalists, highlighting the significant loss of treasury funds to corrupt politicians. He questioned why the government struggles to prosecute indicted politicians but quickly punishes “yahoo boys” (internet fraudsters). Ibrahim alleged that all three arms of government are involved in the corruption.

“The Nigerian people have agreed that we don’t want all the anti-poor policies of Tinubu’s government,” he said. The protesters are demanding a more equitable distribution of resources and an end to policies that benefit only a select few.

Cross River State Lawmaker Facilitates Free Fertilizer Distribution to Constituents

Honorable Martins Achadu, representing Yala II State Constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly, has overseen the distribution of free fertilizers donated by the state government to farmers across all wards in his constituency. This initiative aims to boost farming productivity in the upcoming harvest season.

To ensure a transparent and fair distribution process, the exercise was conducted in collaboration with stakeholders and farmers. While addressing constituents, Hon. Achadu highlighted that the fertilizer distribution aligns with Governor Bassey Otu’s commitment to supporting farmers, increasing productivity, and addressing food shortages.

The lawmaker emphasized that the fertilizers are entirely free and intended for all constituents, regardless of party affiliation. Beneficiaries expressed gratitude to Governor Otu for the kind gesture and commended Hon. Achadu for facilitating the equitable distribution. They also applauded the government’s commitment to empowering farmers and enhancing food security in the state.

IPAC Cross River State Suspends Chairman, Edet Effiom, Over Alleged Misconduct

The Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Cross River State has indefinitely suspended its chairman, Mr. Edet Effiom, effective immediately. The decision follows a vote of no confidence passed on him during an emergency meeting in Calabar on Monday.

Effiom was accused of violating the IPAC Code of Conduct by running the council as a sole administrator. In his place, members unanimously endorsed the Deputy Chairman, Rev. Omaleko Efut of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), to take charge in an acting capacity.

The council aims to reposition itself to play a critical advisory role to the government, particularly during this challenging time for the country and its sub-nationals. The suspension and replacement of the chairman demonstrate IPAC’s commitment to upholding its code of conduct and ensuring effective leadership.
