Prince Edwin Okon’s E-SWAT Model Brings Peace and Security to Eki Communities
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
A report by Solomon Ndem has it that Prince Edwin Okon, Ph.D., has taken governance to the once-ungovernable areas and creeks of Eki through a groundbreaking security initiative known as E-SWAT. Launched in 2024, the E-SWAT model has proven instrumental in tackling communal crises, kidnapping, illegal bunkering, and other security threats across Eki and its environs.

The initiative is rapidly gaining recognition as a potential blueprint for sustainable security reforms in Cross River State and, by extension, Nigeria.
How the E-SWAT Model Works
The E-SWAT security approach hinges on community collaboration. Local residents are recruited as frontline security personnel and provided with motorbikes, security vehicles, and communication equipment. These trained local officers work closely with the Nigerian Army, Police, and other security agencies, ensuring a seamless blend of local intelligence and official law enforcement operations.
Beyond law enforcement, E-SWAT serves as an early warning and rapid response unit for emerging threats. Their role extends to mediation and conflict resolution, often stepping in to defuse disputes before they escalate into violence.
Issues ranging from land disputes and local theft to gender-based violence and communal conflicts have seen significant reductions due to E-SWAT’s timely interventions.
From Conflict Hotspot to Peaceful Communities
Just a few years ago, Eki and neighbouring communities were infamous for communal clashes and criminal activities, largely due to the absence of governance and effective security structures.
However, under Prince Edwin Okon’s pragmatic leadership, the story has changed dramatically. E-SWAT has become the cornerstone of peace and security, safeguarding government assets and consolidating the developmental legacies of Governor Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu.
Neighbouring communities such as Eniong and Obom Itiat now rely heavily on E-SWAT for mediation during crises.
A Key Intervention in Community Conflicts
One significant example was the potential conflict between the Obom Itiat and Ebebit communities. When tensions rose, E-SWAT stepped in to mediate, effectively preventing immediate escalation.
Although the dispute eventually ended up in court, observers noted that without E-SWAT’s initial intervention, the situation could have turned violent.
This incident underscored the complex nature of community disputes while showcasing the importance of having a trusted local security structure to maintain order.
State Recognition and Commendation
In recognition of these efforts, the State Anti-Cult Unit and the Office of the State Security Adviser have both commended Prince Edwin Okon for his decisive and proactive approach to security challenges.
His work has set an example for other community leaders, demonstrating that with the right tools, partnerships, and political will, even the most challenging security problems can be addressed.
Stakeholders have since called for replicating the E-SWAT model in other parts of Cross River State and beyond, emphasising its success in fostering peace, stability, and collaboration between communities and security agencies.
With E-SWAT’s success story, Prince Edwin Okon has not only brought peace to Eki but also offered Nigeria a sustainable community-led security blueprint capable of transforming rural and semi-urban areas across the nation.
