Comrade Peter Okim Abang, the newly inaugurated caretaker committee chairman of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), has called upon Comrade Robert Obi, the factional chairman of the association, to settle their differences amicably. Abang emphasized the need for unity within IPMAN and discouraged derogatory remarks against the office he now holds, highlighting the importance of leaving gracefully when the time is right.
Abang made these comments in response to statements attributed to Obi in the media, claiming that he still retained control over the association despite Abang’s recent inauguration as the new IPMAN caretaker committee chairman in Cross River State.
Abang, urging IPMAN members to disregard Obi’s claim to leadership in the state, asserted that Obi’s interim position had long expired.
“I am taking this opportunity to request that Obi and his associates provide the document that appointed him as the substantive IPMAN chairman. He should disclose the name of his national president. If he fails to do so, he should cease presenting himself as the IPMAN chairman in Cross River State to prevent any potential disruption of law and order.”
“If the letter he possesses lacks the name of his national president, he and his cohorts should refrain from identifying themselves as executive committee members of the association to avoid any escalation of conflict. Law enforcement agencies should take note.”
“Based on the documents in my possession, it is evident that the association’s stakeholders and the Supreme Court recognize Chinedu Okoronkwo as the legitimate National Chairman of IPMAN.”
“Upon careful examination of the documents I possess, you will find a letter from the Attorney General (AG) and another letter from the Inspector General of Police. After thorough review, they concluded that this is the correct faction that can steer IPMAN in the right direction and restore peace within the association.”
“I do not know if they possess any of these letters. Let us assume they don’t. I wonder why they persist in identifying themselves as the authentic leadership of IPMAN in the state. Let Obi’s faction present documents that substantiate their claim to the IPMAN chairmanship and inform us of their national president.”
“The actions of this young man are a clear violation of our constitution. The position of chairman is intended to last for three years, subject to renewal. He has been using the caretaker committee’s authority, assuming that the people of Cross River would support his continued chairmanship.”
“I assure you that an election for the chairman’s position will be held after my three-month term, as stipulated. The former chairman should refrain from lamenting a situation that has already transpired, as his time in office has ended.”
“We cannot continue to operate the association under the caretaker committee’s framework. An election must be conducted to put an end to all forms of illegality. If you inquire about the expiration of his tenure, it is unlikely that you will receive a clear response.”
“One’s caretaker position cannot exceed three years; unfortunately, his tenure has extended to five years. What he is doing is creating these problems to perpetuate his stay in office.”
