Jigawa Police Arrest Newly Married Woman Over Alleged Poisoning of Husband in Jahun
The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a newly married woman in connection with the alleged poisoning and death of her husband in Gauza village, Jahun Local Government Area of the state.
Akahi News gathered that the tragic incident occurred on Thursday, January 23, 2026, at about 5:00 pm, sending shockwaves across the local community and raising fresh concerns about domestic safety and conflict resolution within marriages.

The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shiisu Lawan Adam.
Tragic Death After Alleged Poisoned Meal
According to the police statement, the deceased, a newly wedded man, reportedly consumed a meal prepared by his wife before suddenly falling critically ill.
“The deceased reportedly took his lunch at home, after which he fell seriously ill and was rushed to the hospital for medical attention. Sadly, he was pronounced dead while receiving treatment,” the statement read.
Akahi News learnt that family members and neighbours were alarmed by the rapid deterioration of the man’s health, prompting an emergency hospital visit which, unfortunately, could not save his life.
Preliminary findings by the police suggest that the meal may have been contaminated with a toxic substance, leading investigators to suspect foul play.
Wife Arrested as Prime Suspect
Following the report, detectives from the Jahun Division swiftly launched an investigation and arrested the deceased’s wife as the prime suspect in the case.
During interrogation, the police disclosed that the suspect allegedly confessed to poisoning her husband’s food with rat poison. She further claimed that she had sent her cousin to purchase the substance used in committing the act.
Akahi News gathered that the suspect also told investigators that she was forced into the marriage by her parents, a situation she allegedly said pushed her into taking the drastic action.
While the police stressed that investigations are still ongoing, the alleged confession has heightened public interest and concern over the circumstances surrounding the marriage and the tragic outcome.
Case Transferred to State CID for Detailed Investigation
The Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State has ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse for a comprehensive and professional investigation.
According to the police command, the transfer is aimed at ensuring thorough forensic analysis, proper documentation of evidence, and an unbiased inquiry into all aspects of the incident.
The statement added that upon the completion of investigations, the suspect will be charged in court for prosecution in accordance with the law.
Akahi News learnt that the police are also expected to question additional witnesses and verify claims made by the suspect as part of the expanded investigation.
Police Warn Against Taking Laws Into One’s Hands
The Jigawa State Police Command has urged residents to remain calm, law-abiding, and cooperative as the investigation continues.
The command further advised citizens to seek lawful and peaceful means of resolving family and marital disputes rather than resorting to self-help or violence.
“The police further advise against taking laws into one’s hands, as such actions often result in irreversible consequences,” the statement warned.
The command also reassured the public of its unwavering commitment to justice, public safety, and the protection of lives and property across Jigawa State.
Growing Concern Over Domestic Conflicts
Observers note that the incident highlights the broader social challenges surrounding forced marriages, domestic pressure, and inadequate conflict-resolution mechanisms in some communities.
While the police have cautioned that all allegations remain subject to investigation and judicial determination, the case has already sparked conversations on the importance of consent in marriage, mental health support, and accessible legal channels for victims of domestic distress.
As the investigation unfolds, Akahi News will continue to monitor developments and provide verified updates to the public.
