New Naval Chief, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas, Vows to Tackle Oil Theft and Maritime Crimes

The newly appointed Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas, on Thursday officially assumed duty with a firm commitment to intensify the fight against crude oil theft, illegal bunkering, and other maritime crimes threatening Nigeria’s economic stability and national security.

Rear Admiral Abbas outlined that despite sustained operations, Nigeria’s maritime domain continues to face issues such as crude oil theft, piracy, sea robbery, illegal fishing, and drug trafficking, all of which undermine national revenue and threaten livelihoods.

“Our maritime environment remains threatened by a scourge of crude oil theft, sea robbery, illegal bunkering, illegal unreported and unregulated fishing, and drug trafficking,” he said. “These crimes not only undermine our national economy and energy security but also threaten the livelihoods of our coastal communities and the prosperity of our nation.”

According to Akahi News, the new naval chief’s comments come amid ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to curb oil theft in the Niger Delta — a problem that has cost the nation billions of dollars in lost revenue annually.

Strategic Focus: Security, Technology, and Welfare

Rear Admiral Abbas unveiled his four-point agenda to reposition the Navy for greater operational effectiveness. His key priorities include:

  • Strengthening maritime security operations through intelligence-led patrols and rapid response mechanisms.
  • Upgrading naval fleet capability via technology-driven renewal and modernisation.
  • Enhancing personnel welfare and training to sustain professionalism and discipline.
  • Deepening collaboration with local and international maritime security agencies.

“To confront these challenges decisively, my tenure will be guided by a clear and actionable strategic approach — strengthening maritime security, enhancing fleet capability through aggressive renewal and technology use, prioritising training and welfare, and promoting inter-agency, regional, and international collaboration,” he stated.

Acknowledgement and Gratitude

Describing his appointment as both an honour and a sacred responsibility, Rear Admiral Abbas expressed profound gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for entrusting him with the leadership of the Navy at a critical time in Nigeria’s maritime history.

He also commended his predecessor, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Nkechukwokala, for his “visionary leadership and service,” acknowledging that his tenure laid a solid foundation upon which further progress could be built.

“I will serve with dedication, integrity, and loyalty to the nation,” Abbas assured, pledging to consolidate ongoing reforms and ensure efficiency in maritime governance.

A Call for Discipline and Unity

Rear Admiral Abbas charged officers and ratings of the Nigerian Navy to remain disciplined, professional, and united, adding that their welfare would remain one of his top priorities.

He also reassured Nigerians that the Navy under his leadership would intensify efforts to secure the nation’s territorial waters, protect oil infrastructure, and support the Federal Government’s drive toward a sustainable blue economy.

“The Nigerian Navy will continue to work relentlessly to protect the nation’s territorial waters and support the growth of the blue economy,” he affirmed.

Background: Tinubu’s Military Reshuffle

President Tinubu had last week announced a major shake-up in the Armed Forces, appointing new service chiefs for the Army, Navy, and Air Force, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen national security leadership and enhance inter-service synergy.

According to Akahi News, Rear Admiral Abbas’s appointment reflects a growing emphasis on maritime security, especially as the government seeks to recover lost oil revenue and combat transnational crimes in Nigerian waters.

Akahi News will continue to monitor developments within the Nigerian Navy as the new leadership embarks on its reform agenda to secure the nation’s maritime domain and revitalise naval operations.
