NULGE Raises Alarm Over Alleged Plan to Divert Osun LG Funds Amid Supreme Court Case
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
The Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Osun State chapter, has accused the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) of allegedly plotting to divert withheld local government allocations into the accounts of court-sacked All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmen and councillors, despite a pending case at the Supreme Court.

In a strongly worded press statement signed by its president, Dr. Nathaniel Ogungbangbe, the union warned that such action would amount to “gross misappropriation” and a brazen attempt to subvert the rule of law.
Alleged Late-Night Moves to Divert Funds
According to the union, credible information revealed that senior officials at the OAGF allegedly worked late into Friday night and Saturday to prepare mandates for the release of Osun local government funds covering over eight months into the accounts of politicians removed from office by the courts.
The statement read:
“These desperate moves are a clear attempt to preempt the decision of the Supreme Court. Any payment of Osun State local government funds into private or fraudulent accounts will amount to gross misappropriation.”
The union insisted that only authorised local government officials—verified by the Auditor-General for Local Governments—can legally access such funds.
Supreme Court Case Still Pending
NULGE expressed concern that the move undermines the Supreme Court’s authority, especially as the local government fund seizure crisis in Osun has been pending before the apex court since February.
The union described the actions of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), the Accountant-General of the Federation, and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as “partisan and punitive,” noting that local governments in the other 35 states have continued to receive their allocations unhindered.
“The rule of law must prevail over political desperation,” NULGE warned, calling on civil society, the Nigerian Bar Association, and the international community to intervene.
Calls for Accountability and Justice
The union urged all agencies involved, particularly the CBN, to resist any illegal instructions that could compromise due process or lead to criminal liability in the future.
“Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done. The people of Osun State will not accept this injustice,” the statement concluded.
The Supreme Court’s ruling on the matter is expected to provide clarity on the control and disbursement of local government funds in the state.
