OAU Freshers’ Orientation Continues as University Adopts New CCMAS Curriculum for 100-Level Students

Orientation Holds at Renovated Amphitheatre

The ongoing orientation programme for newly admitted students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, continues today, Tuesday, 4th of November, 2025, by 9:00 a.m. prompt at the institution’s newly renovated Amphitheatre.

According to updates obtained by Akahi News, this 2024/2025 academic session marks a major transition for the university’s undergraduate structure, as 100-level students will now operate under the new Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) instead of the previous Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS).

The reform, introduced by the National Universities Commission (NUC), is part of a national effort to modernise university education and align academic programmes with contemporary global standards.

CCMAS to Replace BMAS for Fresh Students

Under the new curriculum, several course codes and titles are expected to change from what is obtainable in the existing system. For instance, GLT will replace SER 001 for some departments, while general courses such as Library and Information Studies (LIB) remain compulsory for all students.

However, the changes apply only to 100-level students. Direct Entry (DE) students admitted into 200 level will continue to run the BMAS curriculum, alongside returning 200-level students, to ensure academic consistency across levels.

Akahi News gathered that this phased approach will allow the university to smoothly integrate the CCMAS across all faculties in subsequent academic sessions.

OAU Freshers Experience Renewed Campus Spirit

Excitement continues to fill the OAU campus as the 2024/2025 freshers undergo orientation activities. Akahi News correspondence, Ilori Timileyin Ayobami Omokorede, who is currently on ground at the OAU campus, reported vibrant scenes from yesterday’s session and noted the enthusiasm among the new students as they get familiar with the university environment.

Omokorede confirmed that many students expressed joy at being part of the first group to use the well-renovated Amphitheatre, which now boasts improved facilities, modern seating, and enhanced sound systems. He remains on standby to provide live updates from today’s continuation of the orientation programme.

Await Clarifications on Course Registration

Meanwhile, the university authorities have advised new students to await official information regarding course registration, as details relating to the new CCMAS framework — including course allocation and departmental adjustments — will soon be communicated through official channels.

Academic advisers across faculties are also expected to guide students through the registration process to ensure a seamless transition into the new academic structure.

OAU Marches Into a New Academic Era

The introduction of the CCMAS curriculum is viewed as a bold step toward enhancing educational quality and innovation at OAU. It aligns with broader NUC reforms aimed at producing globally competitive graduates equipped with practical knowledge and industry-relevant skills.

As the orientation programme progresses, Akahi News gathered that the remaining sessions will focus on academic ethics, student welfare, campus life, and personal development, marking the beginning of what promises to be a transformative academic journey for the new students.
