The much-anticipated Yala Unity Match football tournament commenced today in Yala I Local Government Area with an exciting opening clash between Okuku and Yache teams. The tournament, which coincides with the New Yam Festival celebrations, aims to foster unity, peace, and sportsmanship among the communities in the region.
In a show of solidarity and support for grassroots sports development, Hon. Joe Pat Ogar, Councillor representing Okuku Ward, joined hands with Wonah Joseph Odey (popularly known as Joebella), former Senior Special Assistant on Security (North) to former Governor Ben Ayade, and Hon. Ogar Joseph Ofiono, former Councillor of Okuku Ward, to present new team jerseys to the Okuku football squad.
The gesture was made on behalf of the Okuku Ward political leader, Hon. Oko Sunday Ebeku, fondly called Otolo, who has been a strong advocate for youth engagement through sports. In addition to the jerseys, the team also received bottled water to ensure player hydration during the competition.
Speaking during the presentation, Hon. Joe Pat Ogar emphasised the importance of supporting community-based sports activities as a means of promoting unity and nurturing talent among young people in Yala. He praised the organisers of the Yala Unity Match for providing a platform where healthy competition can strengthen bonds between communities.
The team captain of Okuku expressed deep gratitude to Hon. Oko Sunday Ebeku for his generosity and encouragement, noting that the gesture had boosted the players’ morale ahead of their opening game. “We appreciate our leader for thinking about us and providing not just jerseys but also ensuring we are well taken care of. This will motivate us to play our best and bring victory to Okuku Ward,” he said.
The Yala Unity Match is expected to feature several communities competing over the coming days, with football serving as a bridge for cultural exchange during the New Yam festivities. For residents of Yala, the event is not only about the sport but also about preserving traditions, promoting togetherness, and showcasing the talents of the region’s youths.
As the tournament unfolds, Okuku Ward supporters are optimistic about their team’s chances and hopeful for a triumphant victory in the competition. Organisers have assured that the event will maintain a spirit of fairness, unity, and entertainment for all spectators.
