Patrick Solomon Defects to SDP, Vows to Advance Inclusive Governance in Cross River State
In a significant political development in Cross River State, Mr. Patrick Solomon, the 2023 governorship candidate of the National Rescue Movement (NRM), has officially defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP). The move, announced at the SDP Secretariat along IBB Way in Calabar Municipality, was framed by Solomon as a principled decision aimed at promoting inclusive governance, accountability, and people-centred development across the state.

Speaking to party leaders, supporters, and citizens present at the event, Solomon described his defection as a defining moment in his political journey, underscored by extensive consultation, reflection, and alignment with the aspirations of Cross Riverians.
“Cross Riverians deserve a political platform that genuinely reflects our shared values of social justice, inclusive governance, and sustainable development,” he stated, emphasising that the SDP’s ideology resonated with his long-standing commitment to equity and public accountability.
SDP Ideology as a Framework for Reform
Solomon highlighted that the SDP’s social democratic framework offers practical solutions to the state’s socio-economic challenges through transparent governance, equitable opportunities, and responsive leadership. He stressed that strengthening institutions, prioritising human capital development, and deepening citizen participation are crucial for achieving long-term prosperity in Cross River State.
Using the education sector as a case study, Solomon called for reforms that balance regulatory oversight with transitional support for affected schools and families. He argued that quality assurance mechanisms must ensure that learning outcomes are preserved while implementing necessary standards.
Strengthening Local Governance and Federal Engagement
Addressing local government administration, Solomon urged for transparent, merit-based recruitment and human resource management systems to restore public confidence and enhance service delivery at the grassroots level. On the federal stage, he underscored the importance of strategic positioning and competent representation to advance Cross River State’s interests nationally, advocating constructive collaboration, policy clarity, and effective engagement with federal institutions.
He also highlighted the role of public trust and communication, advocating for sustained dialogue between government, civil society, and citizens to promote responsive governance and social cohesion.
Motivation and Call for Civic Participation
Reaffirming that his decision to join the SDP was driven by conviction rather than personal ambition, Solomon called on youths, women, professionals, and working families to actively participate in the political process. He emphasised that meaningful development is a collective responsibility that requires shared engagement and dedication.
Ambassador Kennedy Nsan represented Solomon at the event, while Apostle Stella Archibong, the SDP State Chairman, welcomed him back, expressing confidence that his defection would reinforce the party’s reform agenda in Cross River State. “This is a testament to the growing confidence in the SDP as a platform for purposeful leadership. Together, we are committed to moving the party and the state forward,” she said.
Dr. Ekwom Silas, the party’s Vice Chairman (Central), encouraged Solomon to integrate fully into the SDP’s vision, noting that political success hinges on ideas, organisation, and commitment, in addition to resources. Party members from across the state expressed optimism that Solomon’s defection would strengthen an alternative political platform focused on governance reforms and sustainable development.
Solomon’s move to the SDP signals a renewed focus on policy-driven leadership in Cross River State, offering a potential reshaping of the political landscape ahead of future electoral contests.
