Dele Momodu Identifies Atiku, Amaechi, Obi as Leading ADC Presidential Contenders for 2027
As the 2027 general elections draw closer, former presidential aspirant and media mogul, Chief Dele Momodu, has highlighted former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi as the most prominent contenders for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket.

Momodu shared his insights on Thursday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, reflecting on the evolving dynamics within Nigeria’s opposition landscape and the growing relevance of the ADC as a platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Atiku Abubakar Tops the List
According to Momodu, Atiku Abubakar stands out among potential candidates due to his extensive political experience at the highest levels of government.
“Number one on the list today will be Alhaji Atiku Abubakar because he was a vice president,” Momodu said. “He has played at the highest level, having served as vice president for eight years. He started contesting for the presidency as far back as 1993 when he stepped down for Chief Abiola.”
Atiku formally left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) last year, aligning himself with the ADC amid broader opposition realignments. Observers note that his track record and national political presence make him a formidable contender within the party.
Amaechi’s Political Clout
Momodu also highlighted the credentials of Rotimi Amaechi, noting his extensive service record spanning legislative, executive, and ministerial roles.
“The next person will be Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, who has been Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly for eight years,” Momodu stated. “He has been governor for eight years and a minister for eight years. That is a long record of public service.”
Amaechi, a former APC presidential aspirant, has been one of the earliest high-profile politicians to join the ADC, remaining vocal in his criticisms of the Tinubu administration.
Peter Obi Emerges as a Key Contender
The veteran journalist further mentioned Peter Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party, as another leading candidate.
“Then we will go to Peter Obi, who also served as governor of Anambra State for two terms,” Momodu added. Obi’s departure from the Labour Party and subsequent alignment with the ADC has intensified speculation about a strong opposition coalition.
Building a United Opposition Front
Momodu stressed that success against the ruling party would require cooperation among opposition forces, urging members to set aside personal ambitions.
“We need the cooperation of everybody. That is why we call it a coalition,” he said. “It’s not a one-man thing, and Nigeria does not recognise independent candidacy. We must work together if we want to succeed.”
The former journalist warned that the APC is gradually consolidating power, and only a united opposition can present a credible challenge in 2027.
With prominent figures like Atiku, Amaechi, and Obi now converging under the ADC, analysts suggest that Nigeria’s political landscape is entering a phase of strategic realignment that could reshape the race for the presidency.
