Prof. Sandra Duru Petitions IGP, Seeks Probe of CP Fakorede Over Alleged Misconduct
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
The political storm surrounding the case between the Federal Government and Senator Natasha Akpoti has taken a new twist, as Prof. Sandra Duru, popularly known as Prof. Mgbeke, has formally petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) demanding the removal and investigation of Commissioner of Police Akin Fakorede.

Allegations of Misconduct Against CP Fakorede
In the petition, Duru accused CP Fakorede, who heads the IGP Monitoring Unit, of corruption, intimidation, and obstruction of justice. She alleged that the officer had abused his position by interfering with her case, describing his actions as “gross misconduct” and “institutional complicity.”
According to details obtained by Akahi News, Duru insisted that Fakorede compromised evidence and tampered with witnesses. She further demanded the immediate release of a suspect linked to her case, the return of her case file, and the handover of her house keys, which she alleged remained in police custody.
Escalating Tensions and Evidence Released
The rift between Duru and CP Fakorede reportedly escalated after the release of WhatsApp conversations that appeared to show the officer praising her as a “hero of the moment” before relations soured when she accused him of misconduct. The exchanges soon descended into heated insults, reinforcing Duru’s claim that the officer had compromised investigations.
Akahi News gathered that Duru also released videos and audio recordings, which she claims substantiate her allegations. She issued the IGP a 72-hour ultimatum to act on her petition, citing threats to her life and mounting pressure on her family.
Wider Legal and Public Fallout
Beyond the petition, Prof. Duru has launched separate legal actions against individuals she accuses of defaming her. That case is reportedly lodged at the Cyber Crimes Unit. She maintains that certain elements within the police hierarchy are colluding with Senator Natasha Akpoti to frustrate the legal process.
Observers told Akahi News that her public campaign has divided opinion. While some see her as a whistleblower exposing institutional rot, others accuse her of pursuing a personal vendetta. The controversy has generated widespread discussions on social platforms, including Nairaland, where users remain split on whether her allegations are credible or politically motivated.
Crisis of Confidence in Law Enforcement
For many Nigerians, the matter underscores a deeper crisis of trust in law enforcement. Allegations of bias, corruption, and interference in politically sensitive cases have long plagued the police force, and the petition against CP Fakorede is likely to intensify calls for greater accountability.
At the time of filing this report, the police hierarchy had yet to issue a public response to the petition.
Akahi News will continue monitoring this developing story, particularly the IGP’s response to Prof. Duru’s allegations and the broader implications for Nigeria’s justice system.
